People have often talked about Ian Garry and his potential to be a champion in the future, given that he’s still undefeated and has scored major wins over some notable names in the UFC. On the other hand, some people are talking about his personal life, especially his adopting his wife Layla Machado Garry‘s maiden name. It seems like commentator-cum-analyst Laura Sanko has the answer as to why ‘The Future’ decided to change his name.

Following Ian Garry changing his name, speculations arose that the 27-year-old Irish fighter may have adopted the name of his wife’s ex-husband. However, that is not the case. Laura Sanko opened up on that conversation during a recent appearance on the ‘JAXXON Podcast‘, claiming that Garry’s name change was connected to his stepson.

Prior to meeting Ian Garry, Layla Machado Garry already had a son with her ex-husband Richard Cullen. After their separation, she had another child, but it was with the 27-year-old UFC welterweight star. To make his stepson feel included in the family, Garry decided to make a change in his name.

“I’ll tell you the real story… the reason why he changed his name is because his wife had a son from her previous marriage and he wanted to make that son feel just as much as a part of the family as their son that they have together,” said Laura Sanko. She further added that to show his appreciation for his wife and his sons, Ian Garry decided to add the ‘Machado’ in all of their names.

“As a gesture of like, I want this family to be a unit, I’m gonna take not her ex-husband’s name, [use] her maiden name, and add it to our family name,” Laura Sanko added. She ended her revelation about Ian Garry’s name change by stating that he did not want to make his stepson feel as if his father was not with him.

“So it was like a move on his own to be like, ‘I want this kid to feel like I’m his dad. So, I’m gonna have the same last name as both of my sons’, was his point,” the UFC’s sole female commentator added. Now that we have uncovered details about Ian Garry’s name change, let us take a look at the details about his children.

Who are Garry’s sons?

Ian Garry has two sons. As we have mentioned earlier, he has one biological child with Layla Machado Garry. ‘The Future’ welcomed his son Leandro Vegas Machado Garry into the world in 2022, just about a month before the UFC star’s birthday. The couple have posted several pics of their baby boy on social media.

On the other hand, not much is known about Ian Garry’s stepson, Lucas. Layla Machado Garry has often kept her older son out of the limelight and even posted an article about it on her website, claiming that there is no way to control what happens to an image that people post on their children on the internet.

Despite the controversies he has been involved in and the array of back-and-forth he has had with UFC fighters, Ian Garry seems to be a rather opposite individual when it comes to his family. He seems extremely protective and loving to his wife and children.
