The combat sports world is indeed a crazy place. Here everyone voices their opinions loud and clear, which leads to counter opinions often developing into banters. Recently, IBF Bantamweight Boxing champion, Ebanie Bridges took a dig at proposals to outlaw boxing ring card girls. Bridges also worked as one of them in Australia while she was younger. Bridges also revealed that before becoming a professional boxer on the international stage, she had spent years working as a ring card girl at boxing and Muay Thai events. It is also pertinent to note that the UFC’s famed ‘The Eagle’, Khabib Nurmagomedov, had also commented in favor of the banishment of ring card girls the previous year.

‘The Eagle’ didn’t see a point in having ring girls and explained that the rounds could be shown on the screen as well. This probably infuriated Bridges, who fired back at Nurmagomedov and all others with the same opinion.

Khabib Nurmagomedov termed ring card girls as useless

Speaking to the press at a conference in Moscow about a year ago, ‘The Eagle’ narrated his views about ring card girls in boxing and MMA. He stated, “Ring Girls are the most useless people in martial arts. What’s their function? You can show that it is the second round on the screen?”

Nurmagomedov also iterated, “If we look at history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion.” Bringing up the UFC, he said, Dana White maybe likes it. Maybe you do too. But my name is not Dana. My name is Khabib”.

Also previously, many political parties and women’s advocacy groups had vocalized their opinion of banning ring girls in combat sports, which didn’t impress ‘Blonde Bomber‘ at all.

Ebanie Bridges fired at ones like Khabib, putting up the advantages

Bridges argued that everyone related to a fight, including the ring girls, is an equally significant part of the showdown. She stated that “Boxing is an entertainment sport–it always has been. And ring girls are entertainment,”.

‘Blonde Bomber’ then added, “If I was a ring girl now I’d be gutted if somebody banned me from doing it. Being a card girl made me want to box more. Card girls ask me all the time how to get into the sport.” It was evident that working as a card girl increased her desire in her to get into the sport as well. She thought that it would definitely work out the same way for others as well.

In several countries across the world, grid girls are no longer used in professional racing. Politicians and lawmakers fought to prevent Octagon girls from participating in the most recent UFC event in Australia as well.

‘Blonde Bomber’ was definitely enraged to see the combat sports world going against ring girls.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
