At UFC 289, Charles Oliveira came out as the victor in his widely anticipated matchup against Beneil Dariush. In a dominant performance, the Brazilian finished his opponent in the first of the five-rounder match. It came as a surprise considering the Brazilian is coming off a loss against UFC Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in October last year.

Regardless, this win has once again put ‘Do Bronx’ back into the title picture. Considering the former lightweight champion never got his rematch with the Dagestani, many have been vocal about this. Oliveira himself has shown faith in the fact that he would be next in line for the title. Despite no official words yet, many are already coming out with predictions of the proposed bout. The latest of these comes from Olivera’s coach Diego Lima.

Diego Lima predicts Islam Makhachev getting finished in the rematch

In his recent interview with MMA Fighting, Lima sat down to discuss the fighter’s proposed fight for the UFC lightweight strap. According to him, his pupil’s next bout with Makhachev wouldn’t go like the last time they crossed paths.

Instead, he predicts a knockout victory for Oliveira. If Lima is to be believed, Charles Oliveira was unable to execute his strategy. For this, he credits the Dagestani’s performance as something they would like to address for ‘Do Bronx’s’ next fight. For those unfamiliar, Charles Oliveira got submitted by Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 via a second-round arm triangle choke. Since then, he has been out of action until his remarkable comeback at UFC 289.

In Lima’s own words, “He wasn’t all right. I don’t think it’s cool when someone loses and starts giving excuses. It wasn’t Charles’ day, it was Makhachev’s day. Congratulations to him. Nothing we had planned for him was done, and it wasn’t because Makhachev was one step ahead, it just didn’t happen. We’ll train and go there to win.”

Lima further added that he does not see any other potential bout but the rematch against the lightweight champion for his strap. He reasoned this with Oliveira’s resume as a testimony of his potential and why he deserves the title shot. For context, the Sao Paulo native has defeated all top-ranked lightweights, including Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, and now Beneil Dariush. Thus, in his opinion, the only fight that makes sense for him is a title matchup.

Olivera’s coach receives heat for his bold prediction

As soon as Diego Lima’s predictions were out, fans took to the internet to react to the matter. The Brazilian coach’s prediction in favor of his pupil didn’t go too well for most of them. In no time, he found himself on the receiving end of criticism and trolling. According to many, this statement comes off as delusional considering how the current champion was able to stomp through his rival. This should not come off as a surprise to anyone considering Islam Makhachev’s popularity. Here are some selected comments from Facebook.

“Not if he goes in with the same mindset. He looked beaten before it started.”

“If Khabib isn’t there, then maybe. But if Khabib is there, then sorry. Plus Abu Dhabi. Nah, man, you won’t be beating him.”

“After he gets finished by Makhachev for the second consecutive time, he will say that the only reason Charles lost was due to the short turnaround from June to Oct, and will make excuses again. If Volk wins against Yair, make Islam vs. Volk 2 instead of quitter Oliveira in Abu Dhabi, as Islam fought the first fight in Aus.”

“Charles is good and has been on a good run, but Islam is just too much for him, and he proved that.”

“He tapped so easily… Not interested unless Charles beats Volk.”

“Well, he’s not gonna say he thinks he’s gonna lose, is he?”

“No sir, if he gets that position Dariush had, we know it’s over. We want the Volk to rematch more or Islam vs Leon in Abu Dhabi.”
