Jake Paul faces ‘giant boulders’ in the unionization process according to John McCarthy

McCarthy emphasized the self-centered nature of fighters, highlighting their focus on personal gain and the next fight. He explained how the union plans could gain traction. And how it would require the involvement of influential fighters who possess some power within the UFC.

“If you have a Conor McGregor, – huge name within the sport – that would have an impact in making the union. If you had a Jon Jones, that would have a huge impact.”, McCarthy said.

Drawing a comparison to unions in other major sports leagues, McCarthy pointed out that the individual nature of fighting presents unique challenges. In team sports, players come together as a collective, whereas fighting remains an individual sport.  McCarthy acknowledged the difficulty in overcoming these obstacles, referring to them as “giant boulders” that need to be addressed.

Paul has also enlisted the support of UFC legend Anderson Silva to help establish a fighter’s union. During his appearance on MMAFighting.com’s Trocação Franca podcast, Silva confirmed that Jake Paul’s involvement was instrumental in driving progress forward.  Silva emphasized the need for careful planning and structure to ensure the union’s longevity and benefit future generations.

Ultimately, the success of such a union will depend on the willingness of fighters to prioritize the collective good over individual gains.
