There are many similarities between Ilia Topuria and Conor McGregor. Like the Irishman, the undefeated featherweight is flamboyant, flashy, and has an exciting striking-first fighting style. The Georgian belongs to the same archetype as the Irishman, and winning his next fight may propel him to superstardom.

‘El Matador’ is gearing up to face featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 in February next year. But, ahead of this fight, the title challenger is already looking ahead and has floated a potential bout that has drawn strong reactions from fans.

Ilia Topuria floats a fight against Conor McGregor

Ilia Topuria posted a tweet from his official account that simply said “Topuria vs McGregor #ufcspain”, floating a potential bout between himself and UFC megastar Conor McGregor. Although McGregor fights at lightweight or welterweight, heavier than Topuria’s featherweight division, the amount of money on the table would be well worth it.

Topuria would get a huge boost in visibility with little risk if he were to fight (and almost certainly beat) Conor McGregor. However, that seems like a very remote possibility, and ‘El Matador’ is scheduled to face the greatest UFC featherweight of all time, Alexander ‘The Great’ Volkanovski, in just over two months, a fact that fans were quick to remind the featherweight of.

Fans react to Topuria’s tweet

Fans were quick to react to Topuria’s idea and told ‘El Matador’ their thoughts on the subject in replies to his tweet:

One fan felt that for this to even be possible, McGregor needs to win his net fight:

“We need Conor to come back with a W not a L”

Another felt Topuria was not in McGregor’s league:

“Shhh, bro, you aren’t even good. Don’t ever bring up conors name again.”

Another agreed with this sentiment:

Another advised Topuria to not pursue this:

One fan was excited but knew there were slim chances of it ever happening:

“Don’t tease me ilia”

Another pointed out that McGregor was getting up in age:

“Cmon he’s middle aged”

Another pointed out McGregor was in a different weight class than him:

“Wrong division Ilia”

Another fan kept it simple:

“NO”

One fan advised him to focus on Volkanovski:

“Where did you come from. Focus on Volk.”

Another seconded this:

“Focus on Volk, you aren’t Islam and Volk isn’t Josh Emmett or Bryce Mitchell.”

Clearly, there is almost no chance at the moment that this fight will ever happen, as it does not make any sense for McGregor. However, a victory over Volkanovski in February may change the landscape altogether.
