Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje‘s first encounter at UFC Fight Night back in 2018 is one of the greatest lightweight fights in UFC history. It saw Poirier come back from behind and catch Gaethje on the chin with a clever counter, wobbling him. ‘The Diamond’ followed up with a barrage of punches, until referee Herb Dean stopped the fight to Gaethje’s protests.
Their second bout at UFC 291 this year saw the opposite result. Gaethje knocked out Poirier with a spectacular head-kick knockout in the second round. This loss devastated Poirier, who does not seem to have an obvious next opponent. Amid this uncertainty, the lightweight decided to take to Twitter and ask fans who he should fight next, prompting a reply from an unlikely fighter.

The Louisiana native took to Twitter recently and asked for fans’ suggestions on who his next opponent should be.

Surprisingly, this got a response from the #11 ranked welterweight in the UFC, Ian Machado Garry, dubbed ‘the next Conor McGregor’, who asked Poirier, a lightweight, to come up to welterweight to fight him.
I’m game if your serious about moving up 🇮🇪

Dustin Poirier had earlier been suggested to move up by a fan, but had shot down the idea stating that “the guys are too heavy” at welterweight and that he is “not that heavy”.

Who could Poirier fight next?
There is no doubt that Dustin Poirier suffered a setback with his loss at UFC 291. The dominant nature of Gaethje’s win doesn’t help his case either. While Gaethje seems to be back on track for a shot at the lightweight title in the next year following the Oliveira – Makhachev clash at UFC 294, Poirier’s future is less certain.

Poirier will have to win a couple of fights before he is on the road for the title. The two-time title contender can fight Beneil Dariush as that would be a fresh matchup. ‘Diamond’ had publicly accepted and then backed out of a fight with him. Conor McGregor‘s return, too could be a chance for Poirier to get a big fight. Or, the Louisianan could move up to welterweight to fight Colby Covington or Garry. But, he has already ruled out moving up in a tweet recently. Who do you think Poirier should face next? Tell us in the comments section below.
