Khabib Nurmagomedov is arguably one of the toughest fighters in the history of MMA. The former UFC champion ended his career on a high note with 29 wins without any losses. However, he had to overcome his own set of hurdles on the way to becoming the UFC champion and a Hall of Famer. UFC president Dana White once found himself in a dilemma when he had to choose either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Conor McGregor as the potential contender for the lightweight championship.

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov both possess resumes that most MMA fighters could only dream of. Dana White faced a monumental challenge as a result of this predicament. He found it very hard to select the ideal opponent for the then-champion, Eddie Alvarez, for the lightweight title.

Dana White was scared after Khabib Nurmagomedov kept screaming at him from inside the Octagon

‘The Eagle’ faced Michael Johnson at UFC 205, during which to turned to Dana White and screamed at him for a chance to fight for the title. The UFC president addressed the incident in an interview later and acknowledged Nurmagomedov’s unwavering commitment to becoming the absolute best in the promotion. Dana White said, “[Khabib was] screaming at me after the fight.”

Moreover, when ‘The Eagle’ screamed at White, the 53-year-old promoter got scared to a certain extent. He said, “I got a feeling if he doesn’t get a title shot, I am gonna get my a** kicked.” Dana White added, “I will talk to him and we will figure it out.” It was perhaps one of the most uncomfortable situations that the UFC president found himself in.

‘The Eagle’ believed he deserved a shot at the lightweight title

Khabib Nurmagomedov made a stern statement after winning his UFC 205 fight. He even warned Dana White that he would destroy, or in his famous words, “smesh” Conor McGregor if he got that opportunity. ‘The Eagle’ appeared in an interview and shared his thoughts about the situation. He said, “This is not about oh I sit down with Dana.” Nurmagomedov added, “This is about my title shot. This is about what I deserve.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov was certain about his status as the most deserving title contender. He did not want to have any unnecessary conversation with Dana White, but about getting his hands on the champion, Eddie Alvarez. Nurmagomedov’s relentless pursuit of a title shot was driven by an insatiable desire for success.

The Hall of Famer even took shots at Dana White for not presenting him with real offers. But the UFC president believed that it made sense for Conor McGregor to fight Eddie Alvarez in New York and decided to go ahead with that plan. ‘The Eagle’ would later win the title after a couple of years at UFC 223 and etch his name as one of the greatest fighters to grace the Octagon.
