“I’m Not Gonna Fight” – Father’s Cancer Diagnosis Almost Forced UFC 286 Star Jack Shore to Pull Out of Featherweight Debut

UFC 286 had an exciting card that featured two amazing featherweight bouts. One of those bouts included Welsh star Jack Shore, who emerged victorious against Makwan Amirkhani via a submission win. However, he delivered a piece of unfortunate news following his win. Shore revealed that his father was battling cancer.

Jack Shore is one of the most exciting fighters on the UFC roster. He has amassed a record of 17 wins and 1 loss in his MMA career so far. He was riding high with an undefeated record in UFC until his first loss against Ricky SimonHowever, Shore’s UFC 286 fight was an emotional one for him, as he provided an update on his father’s medical condition.

Jack Shore reveals his father’s cancer diagnosis

During the post-fight interview, Jack Shore came clean about his father’s unfortunate medical illness. “Hey, let me tell you something about my dad. November 2022, diagnosed with cancer. Finished his chemo treatment two weeks ago. Here [he is] at the corner with me today,” said Jack Shore inside the octagon.

It was certainly difficult for ‘Tank’ to focus on his fight given his father’s predicament. However, he pulled himself through and won the fight with his father in the corner to assist him. However, Jack Shore recently mentioned that he almost pulled out of the fight because of his father’s illness.

Jack Shore made an appearance on the popular show, ‘MMA Hour’ with famous combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani. ‘Tank’ told the famous journalist that he found out that his father was suffering from cancer a few days after he landed a spot on the UFC 286 card. He said, “It’s been a tough camp, to be honest. I literally go off at a spot on the London card and we kind of found out. I wanna say like four or five days after that we had the news.”

He then proceeded to tell Helwani he considered opting out of the fight. He said, “I didn’t really want to fight to start, and he was like ‘Look, let’s just speak to doctors, and let’s kind of see where we are with it and what their plan is.’ He kind of talked me around…because I mean, if he can’t be there, I’m not gonna fight.”

Jack Shore mentioned that he was not going to bring someone in to replace his father’s role of being in his corner during his fight at UFC 286. However, his father talked him into competing, and hence, he prevailed and won the fight. It turned out to be one of the best fights of the whole event, even if it was on the preliminary card.
