John Kavanagh and Ariel Helwani in a recent interview talked about McGregor’s delay to return inside the octagon. Helwani, in the interview, claimed that he could hear the frustration in McGregor’s voice in an interview. Ariel Helwani stated that McGregor sounded like a “caged animal” who was eager to fight.

Helwani claimed how during a similar situation in 2020, McGregor got so frustrated that he decided to quit fighting. The UFC journalist then compared him to Van Gogh, comparing McGregor’s love for MMA to that of Van Gogh’s love for painting and how it could make him lose his mind. McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, agreed with Helwani’s statements. But he assured him that he was doing alright. He stated, “Well, I was too. I’m not gonna lie but hearing him today and he’s finding this great group of training partners and at least he’s doing that.” Kavanagh agreed that it’s not the same as fighting in front of a crowd, but is glad that McGregor is getting some training in.

John Kavanagh said, “It’s a knock back that we’re hearing. It was April, but now it’s July.” However, he believes that it’s “not the end of the world”. Kavanagh understands the frustration McGregor might be feeling as MMA is something he really enjoys doing, and there might not be as many years left for him. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is also an individual who shares the same passion for fighting as McGregor does. ‘Volk’ finds himself battling with himself when he’s not in camp. Though not as erratic as McGregor, Volkanovski has some battles he faces when he’s alone.

This could be the case for most fighters as, once you get used to competing and training at a high level for most of your career, it gets harder to just relax. Especially for combat sports, there have been cases where retired fighters come back to fighting. Most of the time, not even for the money, but for the thrill of getting inside the ring.
