Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the greatest fighters in all of MMA history. The Dagestani has an undefeated 29-0 record and was so dominant that he did not lose even one round in his UFC career. He would push around his opponents with his superior strength and relentless ground game.
However, many people feel he retired too soon and did not get a chance to solidify his legacy with a few more title defenses. But ‘The Eagle’ was undoubtedly one of the most dominant champions in the history of the UFC. And in conversation with Patrick Bet-David, Nurmagomedov revealed the mindset that made him a champion.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is still confident he can beat any fighter

Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed that he is innately competitive and has been so since birth. He also reminded people that he retired due to his father’s death and not because of age or infirmity. The former lightweight champion claimed that he was good enough to defeat any fighter, even today.
“Inside my heart I was like, I was competitive. Like even now even I still believe I can beat like anybody in the world even now I’m not old a lot of people forget about why I retired. Not become not because I become old. It was because I lost my father because he passed away.Like I was competitor since I think like since when I was born you know,” he said.

His father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was Khabib’s first coach and mentor. The two were very close, and his death in July 2020 due to complications caused by Covid-19 affected him deeply. The Dagestani dedicated his win against Justin Gaethje in October 2020 to his father and decided to retire from the sport.

The 34-year-old told Bet-David the mindset needed to become a champion. He pointed out that many good fighters train hard and have skills and abilities. But, what separates the good from the great is that the latter are warriors at heart.
“Many people they trained like years they have good skills they know how to wrestle, punch, kick, everything but inside they’re not warriors. When you’re professional and inside your heart, you’re a warrior, this kind of people can become like can become champions and defend a title,” the Dagestani stated.

Khabib Nurmagomedov may have retired early. But, even in his short career, he has left an indelible mark on the history of the sport.
