Is Derek Brunson Retired? After News of Getting Cut by the UFC, Manager’s Statement Sheds Light on Veteran’s Future

Derek Brunson has given 11 years of his life to the UFC. That is no small time for any fighter. The fighter may have left the UFC for good now as suggested by his manager Ali Abdelaziz. Amid frequent fight cancelations, the time has come for the American veteran to look forward to something new.

Fans are left wondering if ‘The One’ will join another league like many fighters do. The last time anyone saw him inside the Octagon was at UFC 285 where he faced a tragic technical loss in the second round of the bout. Now, with his future fight also scrapped, Derek Brunson is ready for a new direction.

Manager’s statement clarifies Derek Brunson’s exit

Ali Abdelaziz spoke to ESPN about Brunson’s exit from the UFC. His statement soon went viral and the news about the fighter’s exit spread. He was also taken off UFC’s official fighting roster which gave fans a crystal clear idea. Whether or not Brunson has future plans is still unclear but his exit is certainly confirmed.

Damon Martin who works for MMA Fighting also shared the statement on his X handle. While Brunson has not made any official comments, his former agent thinks that he will try to make headways in different promotions. In Decemer 2022, he was supposed to fight Jack Hermansson but withdrew due to an injury. Later, he faced off against Dricus du Plessis and lost due to a technical knockout. After the fight, the 39-year-old hinted at his eventual exit by tweeting:

Derek Brunson hasn’t had it easy, but then, nobody in the UFC does. Not for that long anyway. When he was supposed to fight Jack Cannonier back in January 2022, things were already looking shaky. After losing the fight by a brutal knockout in the second round itself, Brunson told his fans,

“Made a title push . Number 3 vs 4 in the world . I came up short . Life lessons . Im all good , sad but life will give you theses moments . I’ll pick myself up for one more fight . Blessings all.”

So the next fight was destined to be his last. He promised everyone one last push and delivered on it. And even though he lost in the very end, he still gave out a performance worth remembering. Retiring with a 23-9 record over an 11-year-long career isn’t insignificant at all. Now, fans await the fighter’s decision about moving to something new or retiring for good.
