The Canadian singer suffered ͏a ͏significant $700,000 loss when ͏he bet against Du Plessi͏s, leaving the MMA community perplexed ͏and͏ adding yet another name to the list of fighters taken by ‘the ͏Drake Curse.’ In a recent statement, the champion sarcastically expressed grati͏tude to Drake ͏for the bet, sparking͏ a strong rea͏ction from͏ fans.

‘Drake Curse’ takes center stage after UFC 297

Dricus Du Plessis etched his name into the annals of South African sports history by achieving a historic feat. In a thrilling showdown at the Scotiabank Arena,’ Stillknocks’ displayed his prowess and determination as he clinched the coveted UFC middleweight title. The fighter appreciated his fans through social media. “History has been made. This is Africa; we fear nothing and certainly no one!! Thank you, South Africa. It’s an honor representing our beautiful nation,” wrote Du Plessis.

He further took one step further to add a thank you note to Drake. “O snap, almost forget , thanks @drake.” The Canadian rapper has a reputation for placing bets that fail. His $700K bet would have earned him a whopping $1.37 million had Strickland won.

As soon as Du Plessis mocked Drake, fans flooded the internet to express their opinions. Following are some of their reactions.

Starting off, a fan wanted to stop Drake from ever betting again. This is not the first time that Drake’s bet has worked against the fighters. Israel Adesanya‘s loss to Strickland, which was arguably the biggest upset of the year 2023, and now Strickland’s defeat to Du Plessis were all instances of ‘the Drake Curse.’

Drake had publicly revealed this substantial bet on his Instagram Stori͏es, but luck wasn’t on his side as the outcome went against his prediction. Nonetheless, this is not the first time the singer ͏has lost a substantial amount of money, and this is not his biggest betting loss either.

Drake and his failed MMA bets

Drake has lost money on multiple occasions via betting on fighters.  The singer lost a staggering $2 million in the UFC bout featuring Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira for the middleweight championship at UFC 281. His bet was placed on Adesanya, who was considered the favorite to win. However, contrary to their expectations, Pereira emerged as the victor.

On the second occasion, Drake lost another $500000 after placing a bet on Israel Adesanya on UFC 293. Adesanya was the favorite to win the match against Sean Strickland, however ‘Tarzan’ clinched the victory in a shocking upset. Additionally, the singer tried his luck in boxing as well but was still unlucky.

Drake placed a $400,000 bet ͏on the fight between YouTube sensation Jake Paul and former Love Island UK contestant Tommy Fury, but unfortunately, he lost the wager. All in all, ͏the singer has lost millions of dollars betting, but none of that seems to have slowed him down in betting on his favorite combat sports stars.
