During his time in the UFC, Sylvia was a dominant force in the heavyweight division. He made his debut at UFC 39 in 2002. Back then, Sylvia was an undefeated fighter with a record of 13-0. In his second fight in the UFC, he fought for the UFC heavyweight title and won. He even successfully defended the title once before being stripped of it due to a failed post-fight drug test after his bout against Gan McGee.

Sylvia won UFC gold once again 4 years later at UFC 59: Reality Check. This time, he defended the title two times before losing it to Randy Couture. He parted with UFC in 2008, with a record of 9 wins and 4 losses in the organization.
