The Dagestan native, who sits at number four in the lightweight division, is on a ten-fight undefeated streak now. Given his run in the promotion, Makhachev and his coach Khabib Nurmagomedov have been asking for a title shot next.

However, number one contender Justin Gaethje, who is already in the picture, might face UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira next. That fight is not official yet.

Meanwhile, the former champion, Conor McGregor, who suffered an injury in his last outing, has recovered and hinted at a return this year. Despite being on a two-fight skid, ‘The Notorious’ stated that he can skip the line and fight for the title next.

On being asked to shed light on McGregor’s comments about potentially getting a title shot against ‘Do Bronx’ as soon as he comes back, Makhachev said, “Honestly, I don’t remember when this guy beat someone. “He have to come back, beat someone and let’s go why not? I am gonna smash him like easy. Bobby Green’s gonna be hard (harder) for me!”

Will Conor McGregor receive a title shot before Islam Makhachev?

‘The Notorious’ is the promotion’s PPV star, but unfortunately, he has only bagged one win in his last four UFC bouts. In the same time frame, other lightweight fighters like Justin Gaethje and Islam Makhachev have had a better run in the promotion.

However, the Dublin native has had a history of jumping the queue and getting the title shot before other contenders. His title fights with Eddie Alvarez in 2016 and Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 are chief examples of it.

Also, as Gaethje vs. Oliveira is not yet official, McGregor chiming in for the title shot might change the course. Moreover, ‘Do Bronx’ was also interested in fighting the former champion, as he brings in hefty pay-per-views and lucrative payday for his opponents too.
