Charles Oliveira has made it a habit of prevailing despite the odds being against him. Told by doctors as a child that he would never play sports due to a heart murmur and rheumatic fever. But defying odds he went on to become the Sao Paulo BJJ champion at 12.

This trend has continued in his UFC career. He defeated contender after contender that most expected him to lose to on his way to the UFC lightweight crown. And just when the narrative around him was shifting, he lost to Islam Makhachev. Who recently has taken a shot at him on social media.

Makhachev takes a swipe at Oliveira with Khabib Nurmagomedov reference

On his Instagram Story, Makhachev posted a clip from his first fight against ‘Do Bronx’ at UFC 280. The clip saw the Dagestani defeat the Brazilian in the second round to become the new UFC lightweight champion. The clip is from the closing round of their exciting bout. It shows Makhachev knocking down Oliveira and following it up with a submission.

He wrote a caption that referenced former lightweight champion, MMA GOAT contender, and his former teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov with the clip. “Khabib’s famous slippers in octagon” the reigning lightweight champion wrote.

Oliveira promises to be a lion in rematch against Makhachev

Oliveira had a very disappointing showing in the first fight. The first round saw the Dagestani take down the Sao Paulo native and maintain the dominant position at the top for most of the round. The second round was going better for the Brazilian. He deftly dealt with a barrage of strikes from the Dagestani. But soon Makhachev caught him with an overhand right and made Oliviera submit to get the win. Oliveira has talked about not feeling himself in that bout and promised to do better in the rematch.

And he will have the opportunity to do so at UFC 294 on October 21 in the UAE. Another much-awaited fight is the return of Khamzat Chimaev after a year’s absence from the cage. He will take on #6 ranked middleweight Paulo Costa in a bout that many are speculating might have title implications in the near future.

Oliveira, as his statement indicates is keen on avenging his loss. Most do not think he will be able to defeat the ruthless Dagestani.
