Kamaru Usman is by far one of the greatest welterweights the UFC has ever seen. His dominance and skill as a fighter are something to truly behold in awe. To transition from a wrestler to a striker in the UFC while simultaneously dominating the division shows that he is a class apart.

His skill in MMA is, in no doubt, one of the best. Any single specific art form in particular though could be questioned. He might be great with overall striking, including his legs, but what about boxing in particular?

During a Q&A with the press at the UFC 272 press conference, the UFC welterweight champion made a rather bold statement about the current best Pound for Pound boxer in the world, Canelo Alvarez.

In response to one question, Usman confidently stated, “I told you, I’m stopping Canelo.

With a statement as clear as day, Usman cared to elaborate on it. “Listen, you can’t do it until it’s done. So I’m stopping him. Don’t matter which round, I’m stopping him. Whether, and you, everybody knows me. It could be first-round. I could stop a guy or I could stop him in the fifth, so it doesn’t matter.”

Can Kamaru Usman vs Canelo Alvarez happen?

In an age where fighters and other media personalities call out fighters left right and center, Usman’s call out to Canelo could also be considered one that probably might get lost in all the noise. However, this is not the first time that Usman has made stern statements as such and seems pretty serious about carrying this out.

Never say never though, because an entity like Conor McGregor from the UFC was able to challenge Floyd Mayweather for a fight in the boxing ring. This was possible after the Irishman hit a stellar-star status in the promotion and wanted to exceed the boundaries a normal MMA fighter could reach.

As far-fetched as it might seem at the moment, it is a plausible fight that can work out. Both of them could fight at super middleweight with Usman dropping a few pounds, or Canelo could put on some. Both combatants are at the top of their sport in their division. Hence, the constants fit perfectly.

The business variables, however, are left to the respective management heads of each sport. If they could figure out how to piece each variable together, Usman vs. Canelo is a fight that can happen.
