Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje gave an all-time classic for fight fans five years ago. If the stars align, the two lightweight stalwarts might run it back again. After his most recent win at UFC 286, Gaethje expressed his interest in having another crack at ‘The Diamond.’ In a recent interview, Poirier gave his thoughts on the rematch and what would motivate another contest against the human ‘highlight reel.’ His answer sums up why Poirier is one of the most savage fighters on the current UFC roster.

Poirier and Gaethje went to war in the main event of UFC on Fox 29, in April 2018. In a slugfest that went to the championship rounds, Poirier secured a knockout win in the fourth. Five years hence, both stars are in the top five of UFC lightweight rankings and seemingly on a collision course. Poirier welcomes the idea of such a collision, and for specific reasons.

Speaking of a rematch, he said, “It’s a fight that makes me nervous. When I hear a name and I get nervous, it gives [me] motivation.”

He continued, “You know, those are the kind of fights that… same thing with Chandler. When I heard Chandler’s name when they called me with Michael Chandler, I was nervous because I knew the dangers of those kinds of fights and that’s what motivates me.”

Finally, he added, “So same thing with Justin. If they do call me and he’s the name that they say, maybe it happens. We’ll see.”

Both fighters have fought for the title twice and came up short both times. After his UFC 286 win, Gaethje stated his desire for one last title run before calling it a career.
