UFC 278 apparently stupefied the world of mixed martial arts, with Colby Covington entering the arena as a backup fighter for the main event. After Leon Edwards defeated Kamaru Usman at UFC 278, Dana White declared that Covington would get the chance to fight Edwards for the welterweight title. Undeniably, the news rattled the entire MMA world.

Recently, rumors of Usman’s fight with Shavkat Rakhmonov getting confirmed spread around on the internet like wildfire. Even though the fire was put down by Alex Behunin, it seems like some embers are still active. In the recent episode of ‘The MMA Hour’ with Ariel Helwani, Chael Sonnen revealed his thoughts on the convoluted state of affairs in the welterweight division.

Chael Sonnen and Helwani believe it’s all a mess

Sonnen and Helwani had a long conversation on the recent episode of ‘The MMA Hour’. Although the duo talked about many things, they couldn’t steer away from the rumors about Rakhmonov fighting Usman. Moreover, the former UFC contender addressed Covington’s title shot against Edwards. He said that it was fair to let Covington have two shots. However, the aftermath of the rumors that even Joe Rogan was a part of became the center of attention. Nevertheless, the duo seemed to address the future of welterweight division after White announced the next title shot.

He said, “At 170 pounds, if things are true as they have been exposed to us now, what do you do with Rakhmonov? I mean, whatever you do next for Rakhmonov, taking it and making it number one contender seems like it’s off the table. And then what about Kamaru Usman? I mean, it seems like you could get Kamaru Usman and Rakhmonov in there together. But if you did that fight knowing that it’s not the number one contendership, because we’re waiting on Muhammed, who’s waited on Colby it seems like you’ve…”

Helwani cut him short and told, “It’s a mess!” Sonnen seemed to agree with the MMA reporter. Helwani then revealed, “Because you’re letting a guy who hasn’t fought in 14 months or 15 months fight for the belt.” He claimed that Covington’s inactivity, followed by his title shot, created the mess. Uncertainty surrounds the welterweight division after the UFC president confirmed the next title fight following ‘Chaos’ vs ‘Rocky’.

Dana White announces the next title fight

In an interview with ‘The Schmo’, prior to UFC 288, White declared that the winner of the fight between Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad would get a title shot against the winner of the Covington versus Edwards fight. He assured the fight between ‘Rocky’ and ‘Chaos’.

At the co-main event of UFC 288, Muhammad rose victorious over ‘Durinho’ via decision. The welterweight star is now in contention for a fight against either Covington or ‘Rocky’ for the welterweight title.
