“It’s Pretty Crazy To See What He’s Capable Of”: Alexander Volankovksi “Surprised” by Jon Jones After “Bones” Takes His Spot in UFC’s P4P Rankings

Jon Jones established his authority when he made his comeback in the ring. At UFC 285, ‘Bones’ faced Ciryl Gane for the UFC heavyweight title. While there were speculations before the fight that Jon Jones will not be able to overcome the French challenger since he might be dealing with ring rust. Furthermore, the MMA community claimed that Gane’s superior striking prowess would pose a threat to the American.

Despite all the apprehensions, Jon Jones made quick work of Ciryl Gane and submitted him in the first round. Alexander Volkanovski has now revealed the conversation he had with Jones before he went in for his UFC 285 fight.

Alexander Volkanovski was talking to TV personality and Stunt artist Steve-O. ‘Volk’ revealed that he didn’t expect Jon Jones to tilt heavily towards using his wrestling. He also expressed his surprise at witnessing him wrestle Gane down aggressively. Furthermore, the Australian also revealed how Jones had told him about some holes Jones had noticed in Gane before the fight.

Alexander Volkanovski knew Jon Jones’ plan

Talking to Steve-O Alexander Volkanovski was all appreciative of Jon Jones’ capabilities. He said how Jon Jones had told him what exactly he was going to do in the title fight. Volkanovski said,Jon Jones wrestling is incredible like you know and that’s a people are really I don’t think it’s underestimated I think people know but I mean look what even uh DC was taking DC down you know what I mean so it’s pretty crazy uh to see uh what he’s capable of but I didn’t expect him to be so aggressive with the wrestling that surprised me.

Volkanovski further explained what Jones mentioned to him before his fight against Gane. He added, “we chatted to him in the lead up to that fight and he was uh you know saying that he’s seen holes in the stand-up and I’m like is he really gonna try and uh exploit that or is he gonna do what he should do.” Alexander Volkanovski lost his top position in the pound-for-pound rankings to Jon Jones after the fight. This, however, hasn’t affected Volanovski, and he looked mighty impressed with Jones.

Despite Jones clinching the top spot in the pound-for-pound rankings, Alexander Volkanovski displayed tremendous skill and activity to gain the top spot initially.

Alexander Volkanovski lost his pound-for-pound top spot

In one of the biggest UFC spectacles of the year Volkanovski fought Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in a bid to become a double champion. In a war that went the distance, the judges adjudged Islam Makhachev the winner. While many experts and fans thought Volkanovski should have won the fight, the Australian kept his pound-for-pound top rank despite the loss.

It was only the dominant win from Jon Jones that gave him a 9-place leap and helped him become the best pound-for-pound fighter. Volkanovski is now the #2 in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings.
