Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will return to action on April 7th against Iuri Lapicus at ONE Championship. Ahead of his return, he commented on all things MMA and gave his view on the situation regarding current UFC champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Nurmagomedov is currently retired. The undefeated Dagestani announced his decision to not compete anymore after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. ‘The Underground King’ is happy to see Nurmagomedov retire the way he did.

In a recent interview with James Lynch, when asked if Nurmagomedov will make an Octagon return, Alvarez said, “You know, I originally, you know, on and other interviews I’m like, you know, all the greats come back? They all do it. But um, no, I don’t think I think he’s at peace with himself. I think he has plenty of money. I don’t think he has a ton more to prove.”
“He’s at peace with himself. Most of all, and honestly, I’m fucking sincerely happy for him. Because I’ve been in this for two decades, I seen so many bad stories. Like, I see. I see more bad stories than I see good stories,” he added.
“So when I see a storybook ending like that, it like makes me smile, like, makes me happy. It lets me know that like, at the end of everything, there is an opportunity to have peace in your heart, have money in the bank, and go off into the sunset,” said Alvarez further.

Should Eddie Alvarez and Khabib Nurmagomedov have fought in the UFC?
It is unlikely for a UFC level champion to go away from the sport in such an unscathed manner as ‘The Eagle’ has done. Alvarez is also an exceptional fighter in his own merit. A fight between ‘The Underground King‘ and ‘The Eagle‘ would have been a treat for the fans to watch, especially considering the fighting style of both fighters.

Alvarez is a brawler with great wrestling and a very good striking background. And Nurmagomedov is perhaps the best grappler to ever grace the Octagon. At least the Russian’s dominance implies that fact. So, this might be a fight that got away from the fans like so many others.

Nurmagomedov is retired; Alvarez is 37-years-old and is no longer with the UFC. So, both fighters are certainly enjoying their respective ventures. ‘The Underground King’ has been an undisputed world champion under promotions like the UFC and Bellator MMA. Now he is looking to capture the ONE Championship belt as well. A win on April 7 will help him in this regard.
