The UFC Fight Night at Orlando came with a much-awaited victory for Stephen Thompson. The crowd at Amway Center, Orlando, burst out into cheers during his post-fight interview. Alike many other MMA fans, ‘Wonderboy’s’ victory was also celebrated by his noted actor-friend, Jack Black. Thompson and Black ended up being friends after the UFC 264 in July 2021. Black, a seasoned musician, was instantly attracted to Thompson after witnessing him walk out to ‘Wonderboy’, a song by his band, ‘Tenacious D’.

Black displayed immense pleasure after his friend’s win. He had taught ‘Wonderboy’ about a weapon that could have come in handy during his fight.

Jack Black instructed Stephen Thompson about pulling off the Kick of Destiny

Black’s secret weapon was called the ‘Kick of Destiny’. He also appeared in a comedy video with Thompson, where he taught him the fundamentals to executing the ‘Kick of Destiny’. So it seems like this secret weapon helped the fighter win.

The ‘King Kong 2 actor’ stated, “So, Wonderboy, what you wanna do is you wanna snap f***ing high. But you never take your eyes off target. Locked on, target,” and demonstrated the ‘Kick of Destiny’.

‘Wonderboy’ got the technique right as he too performed a ‘Kick of Destiny’ right after Black. But he pulled his hamstring in the process. Black prompted his camera to ‘cut’ the video thereafter.

Thompson replied, 100% man, the guy has gotta reach for days. I knew it was gonna be hard to get on the inside. So, I would use my timing, my distance management to get on the inside and of course good timing”.

Black ended his video, implying that his friend followed his instructions. After his cheers and screams, he said with a comic mood, Yeah. Still got it. He used the technique, kept his eye on target, snapped that kick. Wooo”.

It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
