Jake Paul’s quest to land another big-name opponent for a Netflix exhibition fight fell flat on its face. Less than two weeks before the fight was supposed to go down, his opponent, Gervonta Davis, got caught up in some legal issues, prompting the cancellation of the matchup. For UFC legend Daniel Cormier, things went exactly as he wanted, as he gave his unfiltered take on Paul’s boxing career.

Daniel Cormier never had much love for Jake Paul, especially after the UFC legend confronted the YouTuber-turned-boxer and warned him to stop “playing.” But his feelings towards ‘El Gallo’ are not the reason why he seemed overjoyed that the Gervonta Davis fight did not happen. ‘DC’ just doesn’t think that Paul belongs in the sport of boxing.

Daniel Cormier relishes Jake Paul’s fight falling apart

Daniel Cormier, much like other combat sports fans, was confused when the fight between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul was made official. ‘DC’ has not only expressed his concerns about the size discrepancy but also claimed that there were a lot of other concerns that weren’t addressed. “This thing was a mess when it got announced. You know it, I know it. We had all these questions about the weight difference,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel.

The UFC Hall of Famer has been critical of the way boxing has been blended for more spectacle-driven fights that serve the sport no purpose. The accommodation of influencers and entities from other walks of life in the sport is not something that belongs in boxing, according to Daniel Cormier. Much like many, he also dismissed the legitimacy and purpose of crossover fights.

“Boxing is much different than mixed martial arts. The target audience might be the same, but the demographics [are] different… There are bigger entourages in boxing. It’s just a different world in boxing,” Daniel Cormier added“I still don’t know exactly why this thing is falling apart, but it is falling apart bad! It is bursting at the seams… This should have never gotten started… We are almost now exactly where we need to be in the fight, and that’s it being off.”

And despite the Gervonta Davis fight falling apart, he has promised the fans that there will be a replacement opponent and the fight will take place in 2025. According to reports, a UFC icon seems likely to be the new opponent.

Nate Diaz fighting Paul in a rematch?

Nate Diaz has got the whole combat world talking once again. After the November 14 fight was cancelled, the Stockton native went straight to social media. He has already fought Jake Paul once, and that fight made for a pretty good payday. It appears that Diaz wants to run it back, and on Instagram, the UFC icon shared a picture of his fight against Paul, writing, “Fight accepted. You’re dead.”

Meanwhile, The Ring Magazine has reported that Jake Paul’s team has approached Andre Ward to replace Gervonta Davis, as Francis Ngannou dismissed any chance of him stepping inside the squared circle against the YouTube star. The Hall of Fame boxer last fought eight years ago against Sergey Kovalev and will be turning 42 years old on Saturday, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
