Grappling and wrestling are some of the most important skills, apart from striking, that are necessary for the fighters competing in mixed martial arts. Without a doubt, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tops the list when it comes to grappling in the MMA cage. Although BJJ is an important skill for mixed martial artists, many in the world of combat sports have questioned its effectiveness

Gordon Ryan is the number one name that arises whenever one talks about BJJ. Recently, he grappled with two of the strongest men on Earth, Hafthor Bjornsson and Martin Licis. As he tried and rolled around with the strongmen, he declared that Jiu-Jitsu was indeed an effective form of martial arts.

Without a doubt, as the videos found their way to various social media platforms, the fans began to give their opinion. While many stood alongside Ryan in his conquest, many others saw BJJ as nothing but a skill inferior to striking.

Fans react to Gordon Ryan’s promise for BJJ

Whether BJJ is effective or not is a question that has been asked for decades now. Ryan seemingly took it upon himself to prove the effectiveness of the art. He recently sparred with Bjornsson and Licis, two of the strongest men on the planet. Surprisingly, the submission grappler showed that BJJ can be effective against bigger opponents. Ryan measured up to 6ft and 2 inches and weighed around 218 lbs. However, he took on strongmen who weighed more than 350 lbs to the ground.

The first-degree BJJ black belt said, “I literally grappled the strongest person on the planet and I promise you Jiu-Jitsu works.” Furthermore, ‘MMA Hot Takes’ shared the video on Facebook and the fans took over the comments section. Undeniably, many of the fans were impressed by Ryan. However, a few others still believed that BJJ wasn’t effective in a real fight.

Here is what the fans said:

  • Jiu-jitsu will be affective again anyone with bulk muscle no cardio and no ground game experience.
  • I dont think Ryans particularly weak fellow, and hes a great grappler. Far weaker guy would have far more problems even if he had skill.
  • I’m more impressed with Thor getting out there and trying something he knows he’s gonna lose doing, with the cameras rolling and everything. Strongest man in the world is also a humble guy with zero ego..
  • I’m glad SOMEONE finally answered the question of BJJ’s effectiveness!
  • Well there is no resistance from thor he is just laying and do nothing back
  • Prime Thor is 200kg and way stronger then this version, but still Ryan is best ever hands down
  • Gordon is not exactly a weakling..AND he is the best grappler in the world.
  • Gordon’s Jiu-jitsu is also not most people’s Jiu-jitsu
