Former US Navy SEAL-turned-motivational speaker David Goggins has developed quite a reputation for taking his workouts to the extreme. Aiming to showcase and inculcate the qualities of physical and mental toughness and endurance, not many people are able to do what he does on a daily basis. Goggins’ famous ‘Hell Week’ training has also piqued the interest of several UFC fighters, and they struggle to complete the whole 7-day challenge. But Joe Rogan seems to have a question surrounding Goggins’ workout regimen, as he shared an unusual interaction he had with the latter.
David Goggins’ story is truly inspirational as he was once weighing over 300 pounds while working as an exterminator. But he’d get into the armed forces after shedding an impressive 106 pounds in just three months, and after that part of his life was over, he started attempting some of the most intense and extreme physical activities. Running 100 miles while unprepared, making a Guinness World Record for most pull-ups, and even completing a 24-hour obstacle course in under sixteen hours, Goggins has done some really physically demanding stuff. But Joe Rogan wants to know why.
When people train with pure intensity and dedication, they’re usually sporting athletes or maybe in the armed forces. Those fields require a certain level of physical and mental fortitude. However, Joe Rogan can’t seem to comprehend the toil and the extreme workouts that David Goggins undergoes, since he’s no longer serving in the military and doesn’t compete professionally in mainstream sports. When the 57-year-old tried to get clarification from the former Navy SEAL, he received a pretty strange answer.

“The craziest thing about [David] Goggins is he’s not even training for anything,” Joe Rogan told guest Cameron Hanes on the #2316 JRE podcast. “I asked him about it. [He said], ‘I’m downloading information.’ I’m like, ‘You’re downloading? What are you downloading?’ This is so crazy.”

Now, let us take a step back and figure out what David Goggins meant when he said he was trying to “download information.” After all, it left Joe Rogan puzzled as well. If we take a look at what he wants to say, and taking into consideration his extreme workout routines, his statement aligns with the notion that he’s making use of physical challenges to gain insight into his mental and emotional capabilities.
Moreover, Dr. John Ratey of Harvard Medical School claims that extreme exercises stimulate what’s called the brain-derived neurotrophic factor, making the pursuit of mastery and self-actualization even more sought after due to clarity in cognition capabilities and increased motivation.

After witnessing the video clips from Adesanya’s training, Joe Rogan was taken aback. He said, “Respect—because David broke him,” in the aforementioned JRE episode. “They ran. Then they did the Airdyne bike. And then they’re doing this… And then they do it all over again.” Well, Israel Adesanya made it through and completed all the workouts successfully.
David Goggins has been testing the limits of his body for many years, even though he came to prominence in the 2020s.
