The Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge arrived near the summit venue in her car before embarking on her short journey by bicycle, covering a mere distance of approximately 100 meters. McGregor and the UFC commentator Rogan, prominent figures known for their outspokenness, joined the chorus of criticism aimed at Ribera. They both expressed their discontent with her apparent hypocrisy, highlighting the discrepancy between her eco-friendly public image and her private jet travel.

A tweet, along with a clip of the Minister on her bicycle made rounds, as it read, “A Spanish minister flies on a private jet to attend a climate conference. She then drives on a motorcade, and a 100 meters before the venue she gets off and takes a bicycle, as her two security cars follow her 🤡 #ClimateHypocrisy”. This grabbed the Irishman’s attention as he subsequently questioned the authenticity of her commitment to fighting climate change.

Ribera’s previous involvement in the C40 Cities Summit, where she advocated reducing meat consumption, private car ownership, and air travel, only served to further fuel the criticism. She had been a staunch supporter of banning gas-powered vehicles and encouraging the transition to electric cars by 2040, with the aim of achieving a decarbonized economy by 2050. In fact, she defended a plan to ban all gas cars by 2035.
