Daniel Cormier was shocked by Jones’ injury

There are few people other than Daniel Cormier who know what Jon Jones is capable of. When Jones was suddenly injured just before UFC 295, Cormier was shocked and couldn’t believe what Jones had done to himself. In his conversation with Joe Rogan, Cormier explains why the injury sustained by Jones was uncommon.

When Rogan asked whether or not Cormier had experienced an injury like Jones, Cormier asserted that he had never sustained such an injury, and it was uncommon. “No, it was a very odd injury for me to watch too because it didn’t seem like it was grappling or wrestling-related”  Said Cormier.

He further added “We get extended a lot in Jiu-Jitsu, you know, when you’re in half guard and trying to get up. Every time I go to get up, I build to my elbow, get to my underhook, take a single leg, and the opponent sprawls. Because you have to take your leg away from me when I’m up on my elbow and I get to my half guard on the butt. I always go to the single because I’m a wrestler. You sprawl, try to go back behind me, and my arm gets extended every time. That’s kind of what happened with Jones. He was in an underhook, the guy sprawled a bit, his arm came away from his body, and it ripped.”

Cormier down in the conversation explains that being in the heavyweight is taking a heavy toll on Jones since he has to maintain to good muscle ratio to stay in the division.

After getting the revelation about Jones’ condition after the sparring, Rogan emphasized that Jones might be doing a ton of work to just stay in the heavyweight division. “Do you think that, I know Jon has been doing a lot of heavy lifting to get up to heavyweight?” asked Rogan.

Cormier explained that Jones is doing heavy lifting and this might be one of the reasons for his hiatus. “That and the extra weight. He’s carrying all that extra weight, lifting all that weight, and it’s like, you’ve got to develop muscle, but it has to be usable muscle. You can’t just be big.” Said Cormier.
