The prison on the Island of Alcatraz, popularly known as ‘The Rock’, has been one of the most intriguing pieces of architecture in American history. It operated under the federal government as a maximum security prison, which was active for almost thirty years, from 1934 to 1963. What made it famous in popular culture is the fact that it housed a number of notorious criminals—from Al Capone to George Kelly. However, the prison was shut down during the early 1960s due to a few issues related to infrastructure, operational cost, and inefficiency. But it seems like that’s going to change, and Joe Rogan is excited about it.
US President Donald Trump recently revealed that he intends to open up the Alcatraz prison once more, not for the public, but to be used as a prison. In fact, he’s proposed to expand the prison infrastructure to house dangerous criminals once again. “We need law and order in this country… It [the Alcatraz prison] sort of represents something that is both horrible and beautiful and strong and miserable,” Trump recently told the media at the White House. Now, some people might be opposed to the idea of reopening the prison, but not for Joe Rogan, who claims that the President’s plan sounds “fun” to him.
“You hear that? Trump is opening up Alcatraz again. [laughs hysterically],” Joe Rogan told his guest, Cody Tucker, on the #2317 JRE episode. “The world’s crazy. I like fun. And Trump saying he’s going to reopen [it] up is fun to me.” Now, why is it fun for Rogan? Well, the 57-year-old claims that he knows this decision from Donald Trump could ruffle some feathers, which, according to him, is going to be quite an interesting thing to witness.

Moreover, Joe Rogan claims to have visited the prison back when he was living in San Francisco, and it really made him wonder how anybody managed to escape from it. “I went there as a kid… So, I was in San Francisco from age 7 to 11. I think I was 8 years old. I went over there. I had a little school trip. We went on a ferry,” Rogan added. However, the 57-year-old is not the only personality who’s visited the Alcatraz, as Rogan recalled Nick Diaz’s story with the Island.

Joe Rogan talks about Nick Diaz swimming towards Alcatraz
Nick Diaz arguably showcased having one of the best gas tanks and endurance in UFC history during his prime. But not many people would be aware of the fact that he really pushed his limits in trying to achieve such a physical condition. Yes, during an earlier episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast, the host revealed that the older Diaz brother swum back and forth from the San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island an astounding five times.
As Joe Rogan deemed the Stockton native’s swimming attempts as “insanity,” it’s important to know that the waters of San Francisco Bay are all filled with great white sharks. Fortunately, Nick Diaz never succumbed to any injuries or shark attacks. This truly makes him one of the most iconic combat sports figures of all time when we take a look at his daring acts outside the Octagon.

“Oh dude, well his cardio, Nick Diaz especially, his cardio was insanity. He swam back from Alcatraz. He did it on five different occasions in the ocean with great white sharks,” Joe Rogan stated. “What is it, like a mile and a half or something like that in the f—ing freezing cold Pacific Northwest ocean? They used to think no one could survive it, so that’s why they put Alcatraz there, like put a prison out there. They’re f—ed.”

Is reopening Alcatraz a bold move for law and order or just a nostalgic gimmick?
