Donald Trump Jr. recently made a particular request to Elon Musk, encouraging the Tesla CEO to buy CNBC and MSNBC after parent firm Comcast put MSNBC up for sale, all while CNBC is likely to lay off a large number of employees. But little did he know that this tweet would soon turn into a thread that might lead the Tesla CEO to actually buy the news network.

After all, he is not new to making high-profile purchases that leave many perplexed. When Musk jokingly responded with, “How much does it cost?”, possibly as a joke to laugh at, several job requests began pitching in, including from Joe Rogan who suggested replacing a certain prominent MSNBC host if Musk took over. So what job does he wish to do there, and is Musk actually buying the news network? Let’s find out!

Which job will Joe Rogan take at MSNBC?

When Elon Musk jokingly hinted at buying MSNBC, Joe Rogan jumped right in. The UFC commentator volunteered to replace Rachel Maddow on her show, promising to act just like her on the show to make sure that the audience does not miss Maddow all that much. Replying to Musk’s inquiry about the cost of MSNBC, Rogan tweeted, “If you buy MSNBC, I would like Rachel Maddow’s job. I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies.”

As weird as it may sound to many, Joe Rogan’s influence might actually help the network with its numbers and ratings. After all, MSNBC’s top show has seen its numbers plummet since the 2024 presidential election, where Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris to secure the 47th UFC Presidency. As of now, the show that runs once a week has already lost 41% of its viewers. It also suffered a major decline in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic.

It is worth noting that it is the same demographic that Joe Rogan primarily caters to. So, if Musk buys MSNBC, fans would love seeing Joe Rogan appear on the mainstream network, as bizarre as it sounds. Even the Tesla CEO understands the scale of bringing Rogan, as he was quick to respond with, ‘done,’ to the podcaster’s request.

Elon Musk buying MSNBC—Is he really serious?

Elon Musk’s idea about buying MSNBC seemed like casual trolling, which the Tesla CEO surely loves to do. However, now it looks like the billionaire might actually make the purchase – at least that’s what his follow-up tweet hints at. The X CEO, who purchased Twitter just to ‘save freedom of speech’, is now talking about reshaping the news media landscape by making the purchase from Comcast in a tweet that read, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely.”

As a favor to his good friend Joe Rogan, he even joked about firing Rachel Maddow to give the UFC commentator a show on the platform instead. To make things more interesting, even President Donald Trump chimed in, joking that he’d take on top MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnel’s position, albeit ‘without the c*stration’. So while Musk’s potential purchase of MSNBC remains speculative, his unpredictability makes it hard to rule out, especially with Trump and Rogan being added to the mix. What do you think? Will he make the purchase? Let us know in the comments.
