Joe Rogan Baffled Hearing AI ‘Creativity’ Will Surpass Humans by 2029

Large Language Model (LLM) based Generative Artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT have brought about a revolution that may prove immensely consequential for the future of humanity. And no, we aren’t talking about the as-of-yet unfounded (but not impossible) fears of an evil Skynet-like AI from the ‘Terminator’ franchise that may destroy humanity after becoming self-aware.
There are very real implications for job loss, deep fakes, and the spread of misinformation with the advent of AI. Another area of concern is art, hitherto completely untouched by machines because of the inherent creativity required for it. However, with image generation models such as Dall E and Midjourney, there are concerns that activities requiring high levels of creativity may replace humans, too. Joe Rogan has also outlined his concern at the latest developments.

The UFC commentator was joined by futurist and technologist Ray Kurzweil on episode #2117 of the JRE podcast. During their chat, the two got to discussing the subject of AI image generation models,
Rogan marveled at what these models could do. This led the futurist to opine that generative AI will only get better with time. Moreover, he made the bold claim that it’s “never gonna reach it’s limit” and “it’s gonna keep getting better.”

This led Rogan to fear that if “it can get to a certain point it’ll far exceed what human creativity is capable of.” Kurzweil agreed with Rogan and claimed that when AI can reach the ability of humans, “it’s not just gonna match one human, is gonna match all humans. It’s gonna do everything any human can do.”
The technologist felt that AI matching humans in terms of their creative abilities is not too far off and predicted that it might happen by the end of the decade. “Although we’re not quite there, but we will be by 2029, it’ll match any person,” Kurzweil said. And Rogan thinks this will have catastrophic consequences, as he speculated in a previous podcast episode.

Rogan thinks AI may be able to manipulate culture soon
Fear of Artificial Intelligence is a repeating theme on Joe Rogan’s podcast, who has expressed concerns about the rapid advancement of AI many times, including with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk. In a recent podcast episode with comedian Duncan Trussel, Rogan said that if AI models consume art like films, television shows, OTT series, and music, it will be able to create new art based upon its learnings and thereby manipulate culture.

“If it [AI] has all of human knowledge, all of it, everything on the internet that we’ve ever posted, all the books we’ve ever written, all the movies we’ve ever made… if all that information is available and it can Instantaneously access it and figure out what to do with it, it will just slowly start manipulating culture,” he said. While Rogan’s concerns may seem somewhat alarmist, the rapid pace at which LLMs are advancing, they are increasingly becoming a possibility. Do you agree with Rogan’s take on AI?
