Alex Pereira is the new UFC light heavyweight champion. ‘Poatan’ beat former champion Jiri Prochazka at their MSG card last month to capture the vacant 205 title. And his world-class striking prowess, which had propelled him to becoming Glory’s first and only two-division champion, was on full display against the Czech.

Pereira made short work of ‘BJP’, whom he flattened within two rounds in what some consider an early stoppage. And UFC commentators Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier couldn’t help but marvel at his technique and awkward fighting style on a recent episode of the JRE MMA Show.

Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier told Joe Rogan that he had been the recipient of one of Pereira’s famous leg kicks, which he said hurt a lot. “Alex Pereira kicked my leg and I was like this sh** hurts,” the New Orleans native said.

Rogan commented on how unorthodox his form, and especially his kicks, were, which he was able to land stealthily and regularly, devastating his opponents’ legs. “That dude has the weirdest leg kicks. They’re so sneaky. That dude is so sneaky with that kick… He’s so long and he’s also so odd in his striking movements, they’re very odd,” the podcast host agreed.

Cormier was also impressed with Pereira’s face-off with Jiri Prochazka before their fight. Rogan felt it was one of the greatest stare-downs ever. “Jiri’s in there dancing and sh**… doing all kinds of like weird stuff, right. And Alex is like just, stone-faced like ‘I’m going to kill you’ is what he’s thinking,” a giddy Cormier said about the new light heavyweight champion, whom he also compared to a comic book character.

He is Thanos: Cormier on Alex Pereira

Cormier was also struck by Pereira’s journey to becoming the UFC champion. The former two-division champion felt if former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya had kept his mouth shut, Pereira would have stayed out of the UFC. Adesanya had spoken disparagingly about Pereira, who had defeated him twice in their kickboxing days at Glory.

This motivated the light heavyweight champion to train in MMA to try and defeat Adesanya, which he did at UFC 281 to become the new UFC middleweight champion. And Cormier felt that, just like the MCU character Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame, the Brazilian was collecting achievements at this point. “My cousin has the best analogy for Pereira. He is Thanos. Literally just collecting f**king stones, infinity stones,” Cormier told Rogan.
