‘T-City’ redeemed himself from his loss against Yair Rodriguez back in 2020 at UFC 287 and seems like he is looking to cement his status in the featherweight division. There is one thing about Ortega that stands out from the other fighters, and that is his basic understanding of martial arts. As per Joe Rogan, Ortega knows how to make things right through sheer sharp techniques.
In a conversation with TJ Dillashaw on JRE MMA Show #57, Rogan explained why Ortega’s technique is feared among fighters. “His jiu-jitsu is off the charts. When he grabbed ahold of Cub’s neck and got the Darce at the end of the first round, it was like, “Holy s**t! It’s over. Yeah, but the bell rang, and he got out of it. But then, in the second round, when he jumped on him and grabbed that guillotine…”

He further added, “It’s nasty. His technique is so f**king sharp, and he could do that with everything—any armbars, triangles… He’s a real legacy jiu-jitsu. He comes from, you know, that Henner and Heron camp…. From that Horian school, and you know, from where Royce was from. That’s the Torrance crew. I mean, that’s right from the f**king motherland.”
Rogan made these statements back in 2019 and seems like it’s still relevant in 2024. Interestingly, Brian Ortega kept BJJ at a pedestal, and as per him, children should start their MMA training with BJJ.

Bri͏an Ortega is a master͏ grappler͏ and was͏ once considered one of ͏the most refined grapplers of all time. ͏On a separate occasion,͏ ‘T-City’ explain͏ed tha͏t he ͏is very bullish on Brazilian Jiu-Jit͏su (BJJ), and believes that everyone should learn it to improve the͏ir skills. ” I’m going to offend a lot of people haha. I honestly feel, and not because I’m biased, I would always go with Jiu-Jitsu.” said Ortega in an interview with Bloodyelbow.
He further explained that BJJ is much safer for the kids and it should be the first thing that they should learn in their endeavor to self-defense. “You use Jiu-Jitsu as a negotiation tool. So when the teacher and staff come to break the so-called fight( between kids), literally it’s just a kid holding another kid down and telling them, please don’t bully me.’ They never punch the kid, and they never physically harm them, except for holding them. So that’s why I would lean towards Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense for any kid.”
