Tony Ferguson hasn’t had the best time in his UFC career since 2020, racking up a 7-fight losing streak since his loss at UFC 249. However, it wasn’t always like this. During his undefeated run, Ferguson was scheduled to take on Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, but it did not come to fruition. UFC color commentator Joe Rogan weighed in on this missed opportunity in a recent episode of his podcast.

Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov are undoubtedly two of the greatest lightweight fighters in the history of the UFC. But for some reason or other, they never got to fight each other. Let’s take a look at what Joe Rogan had to say about that situation.

‘El Cucuy’ may be having a bad time in the UFC as of late, but that does not take away the fact that he was once one of the most dangerous fighters on the roster. Joe Rogan believes that during Tony Ferguson’s undefeated streak, there was hardly anyone as good as him. He said, “When Tony Ferguson was on his undefeated run, he was one of the baddest walking men on the planet.”

The aforementioned statement is one reason why Joe Rogan wanted to see him fight against one of the most dominant lightweights, Khabib Nurmagomedov. He believes that the fight not taking place even after it was scheduled for five times was nothing short of a catastrophe. “The fact that him and Khabib never got to fight is a real f***ing tragedy,” the 56-year-old added. Moreover, Rogan brought up a mishap that prevented Ferguson from fighting Nurmagomedov at a time when the clash appeared feasible. Let’s take a look at that front.

The JRE host talks about Ferguson’s infamous knee injury

Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov were all set to finally compete against each other at UFC 223. However, in the build-up to the fight, ‘El Cucuy’ would suffer a very serious injury. He was having an interview backstage during a promotional event when he tripped and fell on some wires that would destroy his knee. Joe Rogan mentioned this incident during the #2074 episode of his multi-million-dollar podcast.

“When he was in his prime that’s when he fell [and] just tripped on some wires backstage during an interview and ripped his f***ing knee apart,” said the JRE host. This injury would ultimately lead to the cancellation of the fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Rogan further stated, “Just completely ripped his knee apart. That’s what happened. That’s why the fight [against Nurmagomedov] got canceled.”

Instead, the opportunity to fight ‘The Eagle’ was presented to former UFC fighter Al Iaquinta. However, the UFC color commentator claims that the way Ferguson injured himself was quite strange. “Al Iaquinta [would] wind up fighting Khabib. But it was crazy. He’s just walking along and he trips,” Joe Rogan added.

Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov was certainly a fight that not only Joe Rogan but the fans and critics also wanted to see. But a variety of reasons and an unfortunate accident kept it from happening. It is safe to assume that it was one of the biggest opportunities that the UFC failed to benefit from.
