Choosing between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje is not easy. The similarities between the pair are many: both are former interim lightweight champions in the UFC, and both have one win over the other. They’ve also lost two fights each for the undisputed title, both times via submission and to the same opponents. Nevertheless, the lightweight duo has become synonymous with the 155 lbs division of Dana White‘s promotion and has a reputation for carnage, something Joe Rogan loves to see.

Recently, UFC color commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan discussed Poirier and Gaethje with comedians Mark Normand, Shane Gillis and Ari Shaffir. Having witnessed both lightweights fight each other from the commentary desk, the 56-year-old claimed that both fighters complement each other well.

Joe Rogan dropped a recent episode of ‘Protect Our Parks’ on his JRE podcast. The episode was briefly removed from Spotify that enraged fans. However, it was re-listed on the platform shortly after. Among some of the interesting things Rogan talked about with his guests, he compared Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Rogan reminded his guests that both fighters have one win over each other. He said, “Poirier beat him [Gaethje] before he beat him.”

When asked to choose who he believes is the better MMA fighter, Joe Rogan didn’t oblige. Rather, the 56-year-old claimed that no matter how many times Dustin Poirier fought Justin Gaethje, the outcome would be a 50-50 scenario. “Those guys can fight ten times and it might be 5 and 5,” Joe Rogan added.

Tied at 1-1, a rubber match between the pair remains a lucrative option for the promotion, but things are moving in a different direction at the moment. Justin Gaethje is set for a return at UFC 300 and Dustin Poirier registered his first win of 2024 a few weeks ago.

Gaethje set for BMF title defense as Poirier gets back in the win column

Dustin Poirier competed in his first fight since the loss to Gaethje last year, earlier this month at UFC 299. He took on the surging lightweight contender Benoit Saint-Denis as an underdog. However, the veteran fighter registered an impressive knockout victory in the second round of the fight and silenced all his doubters. Meanwhile, his former rival and BMF champion Justin Gaethje is gearing up to face Max Holloway at the historic UFC 300 pay-per-view.

Max Holloway racked up two wins in a row in 2023 after losing the trilogy fight against Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight title. However, after registering consecutive victories, ‘Blessed’ has decided to leave his 145-pound title aspirations for a while to fight for the BMF title. Furthermore, UFC 300 will be the first time that the BMF title will be defended in the UFC.

A win for Gaethje could pave the way for a trilogy match between the pair. However, their eyes remain on the ultimate prize, the undisputed belt. On account of everyone else from the top spots being booked for a fight, Islam Makhachev had called out Dustin Poirier for a title defense in June. With the BMF belt and the undisputed belt in play at the 155 lbs division, the upcoming months could see some serious activity shake up the fandom.
