Despite the UFC boss, Dana White’s distaste, a number of MMA fans and pundits have labeled Demetrious Johnson as one of the greatest in the sport of MMA. The former UFC Flyweight king holds an insane record of 11 consecutive title defenses. Multiple UFC personalities like Joe Rogan and the former ‘BMF’, Jorge Masvidal, have lauded the well-rounded fight game of ‘Mighty Mouse’. Apart from his record number of consecutive title defenses, Johnson has also presented UFC audiences with a plethora of memorable in-octagon moments.

Recently, ‘Mighty Mouse’ traveled down memory lane as he put up an Instagram story about one of the most iconic submissions in UFC history. The Instagram reel in Johnson’s story also showcased the noted UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan, going nuts while discussing the one-of-a-kind submission. It also revealed what actually drove Johnson to go for such an unthinkable move.

Joe Rogan labeled Demetrious Johnson’s submission as the wildest one

The ‘Mighty Mouse’ submission that startled Rogan came in his UFC 216 bout against the famed former UFC Flyweight, Ray Borg. The reel in Johnson’s story was a collage of a snippet from ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ episode visited by ‘Mighty Mouse’ and the clip of his class apart ‘flying armbar after suplex’ submission over Ray Borg.

Firstly, it showcased the current ‘ONE Championship Flyweight king’, revealing why he planned to execute such a move. Johnson said, Ray Borg, he said my wrestling isn’t good. So, I made it a point that I’m gonna outscramble you in that fight.”

Rogan followed Johnson with compliments for his awesome submission. ‘The 55-year-old’ stated, “Bro, that finish was one of the wildest submissions I’ve ever seen. Suplex to Armbar in the air”.

A large chunk of fans might agree with Rogan in this regard. Despite witnessing a number of well-executed armbars to date, notably from stars like Ronda Rousey, it might be agreed that Johnson’s combination of a suplex and an armbar to finish Ray Borg has not been replicated to date.

When Joe Rogan had called Johnson ‘the best ever’

The respect that Demetrious Johnson boasts in the MMA community speaks volumes about his superb in-cage skills. Most fans would also agree that it is really hard to find another well-rounded fighter like ‘Mighty Mouse’.

Joe Rogan also isn’t an exception to this opinion. To further cement his views, Rogan also had the famed UFC Legend, Georges St-Pierre, agreeing to him. In an episode of ‘JRE’, Rogan and GSP mutually agreed that ‘Mighty Mouse’ was the ‘best ever’ in MMA.

A large chunk of fans were severely disappointed when ‘Mighty Mouse’ was traded to ONE Championship for Ben Askren. But, most might agree that it was a disastrous decision by Dana White. While Johnson continues to show his mettle in ONE Championship to date, Askren is nowhere to be found in the MMA scene.

Do you think Johnson would have had more title victories if he continued in the UFC? Is he the best ever to do it? Let us know in the comments.

It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
