Bas Rutten is a former Dutch mixed martial artist and legendary UFC fighter. Rutten also happens to be a Hall of Famer for his contributions to not only the promotion but to the sport during his time. He also co-starred in Kevin James and Salma Hayek’s 2012 film, Here Comes The Boom. So it’s only natural that when Joe Rogan sat down with Kevin James in a recent edition of The Joe Rogan Experience, the two couldn’t stop raving about him.

And for good reason. Rutten and his interesting striking abilities have shocked many over the years. Securing 10 wins via submission and several through his frightening palm strikes has given him the status he enjoys today. Here’s what Rogan had to say about him.

Joe Rogan can’t forget Rutten’s palm strikes

Joe Rogan is the world’s premier MMA enthusiast. He knows, sees, and appreciates things in ways perhaps only very careful observers can. This time, it wasn’t something so covert as Bas Rutten’s palm strikes were infamous for knocking people to the mat.

Perhaps his rise to fame was cemented even before he entered the UFC. He and his power to finish his opponents became quite well known during his time with the Japanese promotion Pancrase. Rogan spoke about how his palm was just different than other people.

“Bas was a scary dude dude in his fighting days he was the first guy that the UFC hired that I got excited about .” Rogan told an equally excited Kevin James. “. . .Yeah he worked the bag with his palms to develop that power and he had this crazy ability to pull his hand back like his hand, like my hand doesn’t really go much back further than that but Bas’ hand goes way back.”

Of course, being a Dutch specialist and coming from a kickboxing background gave Rutten that edge but his training cannot be denied. Did you know, the fighter ended his professional career on an 8-fight win streak when he last secured a TKO win against Ruben Villareal at WFA 4 – King of the Streets in 2006?

Rogan hears a tale of James getting injured by Rutten

Kevin James considers Bas Rutten one of his “best friends”. And being someone from the MMA world, Rutten was more than happy to help James train. He told Rogan about how they would just throw mats down in James’ garage and practice their wrestling and jiu-jitsu leading to an injury this one time.

“. . .he rolled me back and I heard a pop and I thought it was my knee but it was my toe, my big toe.” Rogan was physically worried by the retelling of James’ story because it did sound like a painful mess that James claims still aches to this day.

He told Joe Rogan how he never really managed to get “rid of it”. Clearly, training with someone like Rutten can have its costs. But is it worth it? You be the judge.
