It can be hard to predict when tragedy will strike, but that’s exactly what happened in New York. The NYPD said that a suspect was shot and killed after reportedly killing one officer and two civilians near a business building in Midtown Manhattan yesterday. The chaos sent shockwaves across the city, prompting even Jon Jones’ BJJ coach to step forward and voice his concerns about the horrifying events

Talking to his Instagram handle, Jon Jones’ coach and friend Gordon Ryan uploaded the photo of the suspect with his gun walking to the corporate office and captioned it with a question for all, “I’m confused. No one told him it was a gun-free zone? How could this happen? What an absolute f–king joke, NY.” Gun violence in public spaces has been an issue in the country for a long time. CNN says that there have been 254 public shootings in the country thus far.

The NYPD said that their team has stopped the lone shooter. According to someone who saw it happen, a man with a long assault rifle walked into the building. Reports say that no one stopped him from carrying the gun. Law enforcement says that one citizen was shot and is in very bad shape. Also, an NYPD officer and another citizen who were shot in the back are both expected to live.

In addition to that, the NYPD bomb squad is on the scene as well to secure the perimeter. The FBI is on the scene as well to provide all the necessary support to the police department. The Mayor, Eric Adams, took to his X handle to add, “Here is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in the vicinity, and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”

At 6:28 p.m. local time on Monday, Shane Devon Tamura emerged from a double‑parked BMW carrying an M4 rifle and body armor. Surveillance video shows him entering 345 Park Avenue, immediately opening fire in the lobby. His first victim was Officer Didarul Islam, who was providing off‑duty uniformed security for Rudin Management. Tamura then fatally shot two more civilians in the lobby before moving to the 33rd floor, where he killed Wesley LePatner, an executive at Blackstone, before turning the weapon on himself.

As a culture, we should ask ourselves why gun violence is so common in the United States. There is renewed discourse on building security, mental health interventions, and gun control.

Jon Jones, despite announcing his retirement and relinquishing the heavyweight title on June 21, 2025, remains in the UFC’s testing pool and is reportedly in negotiations for a likely comeback. Dana White suggested a return may happen in the summer of 2025, though Jones has also mentioned targeting the special White House card in July 2026. Meanwhile, recently, Jon Jones and Fedor Emelianenko have become a tantalizing “what if” matchup that may never happen. Let’s find out why.

Jon Jones reacts to fighting with Fedor Emelianenko in the White House alternate event

Recently, Jon Jones made it clear that he wants to make a comeback to the UFC, despite having previously announced his retirement from the sport. The former UFC heavyweight champion took to his X handle to announce that he’s back in the testing pool and eager to fight on the White House card. Yet, Dana White flatly rejected the idea, declaring that he can no longer place his trust in Jones.

It broke Jon Jones’ heart, but he hasn’t stopped pushing for a fight on the White House card. ‘Bones’ was in Russia to attend a bare-knuckle fight. During the event, Jon Jones was offered an alternative fight at the White House by IBO boxing head Al Siesta, but he ultimately declined the proposal. “Jon, you know that card at the White House, are you participating in it?” Siesta asked.

Jones added, “I’d like to be, I’m working towards it.” Hearing Jones’ words, Siesta added, “Listen to this, if that’s not happening, I’ve got an alternative for you. Red Square, would you like it to happen on the Red Square?” I’m contractually obligated to the UFC for a very long time.”

Siesta again offered, “No, listen if we agree with Dana White, we’ll bring you to the Red Square as an alternative to the White House card, Dana, I’ll speak to you about it… I’m gonna get someone like Fedor (Emelianenko), two boxers.” Quite an enticing offer, however, Jones straight out denied the fight.“No. No one wants to see Fedor and I fight, I don’t want to fight Fedor, I absolutely love Fedor, he’s been one of my big idols for a long time. It’s the same with Anderson Silva, these guys inspired me in my youth, and that will never change.”

Jon Jones wants to return to the UFC. But will Dana White finally give in to his demands after all the trouble? It’s unclear, but that might eventually make Jones agree to fight Emelianenko. What will happen to Jon Jones’ job? Only time will tell.
