Is Jon Jones the best heavyweight ever? For some, maybe he is after his huge win over former 2-time UFC champion, Stipe Miocic. However, former UFC and ONE Championship king, Demetrious Johnson, doesn’t believe that to be a possibility yet. While explaining his case, ‘Mighty Mouse’ named another fighter who he believes is the rightful owner of the best heavyweight tag.

Demetrious Johnson claims that the best heavyweight in MMA currently is none other than the former UFC and current PFL champion, Francis Ngannou, and not Jon Jones. After his 1st-round demolition of Renan Ferreira, ‘Mighty Mouse’ believes that ‘The Predator’ has earned that tag. “I think, right now, Francis Ngannou is probably the best heavyweight in the world. I truly believe that. After seeing what he did to his last opponent [Renan Ferreira], he beat Stipe, [and] knocked him out four years ago,” Johnson told ‘MMA Fighting’.

Furthermore, 125lbs GOAT claimed that Jones doesn’t qualify to be categorized as the best heavyweight because he’s been in the division for a hot minute. And in order to be in that conversation, ‘Bones’ will have to stay a bit longer.

Given that he’s fought just two opponents, although one of them, Stipe Miocic, is regarded as the best UFC heavyweight, ‘Bones’ still has a long way to go, according to the former UFC champion. “Yes, he [Ngannou] hasn’t fought Jon Jones, but Jon Jones just got into the heavyweight party, okay? Let’s not pretend like he’s been there his whole entire career,” Johnson further stated. However, there is one thing that Jon Jones can be regarded to be the greatest at, and that is being the best light heavyweight fighter ever.

Demetrious Johnson gives Jones his flowers at 205lbs

Jon Jones’ rise to the top of the MMA world stemmed from his domination as a 205-pounder. Lyoto Machida, Mauricio Rua, and Daniel Cormier, among many others, had no answers when they stepped inside the Octagon against Jon Jones. The consensus greatest of all time recorded eleven successful title defenses during his time as the light heavyweight champion, which eclipses what Alex Pereira has done so far in his light heavyweight run. As such, Demetrious Johnson believes that Jones rightfully deserves to be called the king of the UFC’s 205-pound division.

“Me and my producer, we had a conversation. If Jon Jones goes out there and beats Stipe Miocic, would we call him one of the greatest heavyweights? I said, ‘No, we wouldn’t,'” Demetrious Johnson added.

“That’s like somebody coming from the middleweight division, and going into light heavyweight, and winning the belt, and getting in three fights, and call him the greatest light heavyweight. Like, no, Jon Jones is the greatest light heavyweight that we’ve ever seen.”, Johnson further explained.

From the statistical point of view, Demetrious Johnson doesn’t seem wrong about his claims regarding Jon Jones. But do you believe he’s telling the truth? Let us know what you think of Jon Jones and his place in the history of the UFC’s heavyweight division in the comments down below.
