UFC fans may remember that Sanko was the person interviewing Masvidal just before his infamous backstage brawl with the current UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards. Laura Sanko appeared on a UFC 282 pre-event show along with the former champ-champ, Daniel Cormier. This is where the incident happened which shocked Masvidal.

It bewildered Jorge Masvidal to see Conor McGregor on Laura Sanko’s list

Amid various discussions in the show, a list of Laura Sanko’s top 5 active UK fighters’ was displayed. But, to most fans’ surprise, the list also featured the Irishman, Conor McGregor in the no. 2 spot. Masvidal was evidently shocked at Laura Sanko, including the Irish McGregor inside a list supposed to be composed of UK fighters.

Conor McGregor can be called a proud Irish. He wears his Irish identity on his sleeve. He has also carried the flag of Ireland with him to the Octagon multiple times. Considering all these, it is even hard to believe that Sanko made such a huge slip.

Jorge Masvidal might be unaware that Daniel Cormier corrected Sanko

As soon as the list was displayed, the anchor of the show raised the initial finger. He asked Sanko, “But is Ireland in the UK?”. But, the UFC analyst probably seemed to have no idea that the UK and Ireland were different countries that were neighboring each other. She said, “Yes, yes”.

Daniel Cormier seated just opposite Sanko, objected to her answer saying, “How’s Conor on the list? He’s not from the UK.” But Sanko continued to argue, “Yes, he is [from the UK]. The United Kingdom is the United Kingdom of Great Britain”.

Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
