Jorge Masvidal has not stepped inside the Octagon following his failed bid to capture the welterweight title. Fans are eagerly waiting for a confirmation of the next fight for the UFC welterweight. As the year draws to a close, Masvidal has posted a vague tweet that has left his fans speculating about his future.

‘Gamebred’ has been one of the UFC’s biggest stars following his meteoric rise in 2019. He rose to stardom after three stoppage victories over Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz. He only fought once in 2020 and that was against the welterweight champ, Kamaru Usman. While he couldn’t get his hands on the title, he made sure his stock remained high despite competing less frequently than in 2019.

For the next year, ‘Gamebred’ wants to finish his unfinished business, or so it seems from his latest tweet.

Given his bad blood with top welterweights such as Colby Covington and Leon Edwards, the fans are wondering who can potentially be the next opponent for Masvidal. This list of potential opponents, however, doesn’t end at Covington and Edwards.

Stephen Thompson is the most recent fighter to call out Jorge Masvidal

Before his unprecedented rise, Masvidal’s last fight ended in a loss against Stephen Thompson. While Masvidal reinvented himself after the loss, Thompson has seen both highs and lows in that stretch. He lost back-to-back fights against Darren Till and Anthony Pettis.

He has since rebounded from the setbacks with wins over Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal, with the latter coming last night via a unanimous decision. Following the win, he called out Jorge Masvidal for a rematch. Given the timing of his tweet, there are high chances that Masvidal wants a fight with Thompson.

Earlier this year, there were talks around a fight between Covington and Masvidal for the early part of 2021. The UFC is yet to make a confirmation for the same. Given that Usman and Edwards will fight Gilbert Burns and Khamzat Chimaev respectively, that leaves Thompson and Covington as potential opponents for the fighter out of Miami.

A pairing with Covington, who is coming off a dominant win over Tyron Woodley, will be a quick sell for the UFC. The two have history between them and won’t shy away from hyping the fight up. On the other hand, the fight between Thompson and Masvidal has been touted as one between the NMF and the BMF of the UFC.
