In the wake of the unforeseen retirement of Khabib Nurmagomedov, there was tons of debate on where he stands amidst fellow UFC greats. Former UFC double champ, Henry Cejudo, is a friend of the UFC lightweight champ. However, he wouldn’t give him a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of UFC.
The UFC GOAT discussion has always been a matter of debate among fans, analysts, and the fighters themselves. Therefore, a more feasible solution is to have Mt. Rushmore of UFC greats. This is because there are multiple contenders whose performance inside the Octagon makes them worthy of the recognition.
While talking to Helen Yee, Cejudo sided with the people who believe Khabib Nurmagomedov will make a comeback. ‘Triple C’ felt that ‘The Eagle’ was emotional following his win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. Plus, he felt that Khabib has yet not achieved everything in the UFC.
“I think he will,” Cejudo answered regarding if thinks Khabib will make a comeback. “I think he has his dad’s promise for the thirty fights. I think he’s just emotional. It’s kinda like me when I retired, but I was already set in place that I’ve done everything in my career. Khabib has not. He has not done everything in his career.”
Despite his friendship, Cejudo didn’t include Nurmagomedov in his UFC GOAT mountain.
“He’s a good friend of mine. Even when we talk about GOAT mountain, Khabib is not a part of GOAT mountain. I’m not even part of GOAT mountain, to be quite honest with you. But when it comes to combat sports, he’s a part of that mountain. In my take it’s Demetrious Johnson, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, and GSP,” he added.
Henry Cejudo has one of the most stacked resumes in combat sports. Apart from becoming a UFC double champ, he has also won an Olympic Gold in 2008.
While he doesn’t include himself in the UFC GOAT debate, he doesn’t shy away from declaring himself the GOAT across combat sports.
Apart from himself, he included Khabib Nurmagomedov and Daniel Cormier. However, the last name to take the spot on Mt. Rushmore of combat sports was a surprise from Cejudo.
“I’m not a part of the GOAT mountain when it comes to the sport of mixed martial arts. But I will say this. In the GOAT mountain of combat sports, I remain No. 1. I would put Khabib with me. I would put Daniel Cormier with me and I will put Fabricio Werdum with me,”
The former UFC bantamweight champion shocked the world with his sudden retirement in May earlier this year after a win over Dominick Cruz. However, he has been campaigning for a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski so that he can add a third belt to his collection.
