With his performance at UFC 285, Jon Jones has entered the GOAT conversations again. To be fair, the former light heavyweight champion was never out of the GOAT discussions. However, during his three-year layoff, the attention may have shifted from him for a brief while.

Jones is the consensus GOAT of the UFC for many. The 35-year-old has a long list of accomplishments against a stellar resume of opponents to solidify his claim. However, there are other candidates who are laying claim to the GOAT status. That includes former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

‘The Eagle’ retired undefeated with a 29-0 professional MMA record. During his time in the UFC, Nurmagomedov won the UFC lightweight title and defended it three times. Following his father’s passing in 2020, the 34-year-old hung up his gloves at UFC 254 after his third title defense against Justin Gaethje.

His dominant wins in the UFC octagon, having arguably lost only two rounds in his entire UFC career, catapulted him into the GOAT conversation. These factors, coupled with an undefeated streak, made him the GOAT for many fans.

However, with the resurgence of Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, Nurmagomedov’s GOAT status is in question. One UFC star recently came out and explicitly said that the Dagestani grappler’s resume does not hold a candle to Jones’s in the GOAT discussion.

The Khabib Nurmagomedov-Jon Jones GOAT dispute

UFC bantamweight Cub Swanson had a bold claim regarding the GOAT conversation. According to Swanson, Nurmagomedov does not have a resume that is strong enough to back his GOAT claims. Swanson voiced his opinion in a tweet discussing Jones and Nurmagomedov.

He wrote, “Khabib’s strength of opponents really isn’t that impressive when you compare it to anyone in the G.O.A.T conversation.”

While Swanson’s statement might anger the Russian star’s fans, it is not altogether without merit. Jones’ resume boasts names like Mauricio Rua, Rashad Evans, Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira, and Lyoto Machida among others.

Furthermore, Jones won his first UFC title at 23 years of age and defended it more than a dozen times. With his win at UFC 285, he now has 15 title fight wins in the UFC. In fact, Jones has spoken out against people ranking the Russian ahead of him in GOAT status based on these stats.

In comparison, Khabib Nurmagomedov has three title defenses. The notable names on his resume are Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, and Edson Barboza, to name a few.

His surprise retirement in 2020 left much to be desired on his resume. The Combat Sambo world champion also left many ‘what if’ questions unanswered as he left the active competition.
