Islam Makhachev is another Dagestani wrestling maestro with an exceptional ground game. Like his friend and now coach, Khabib Nurmagomedov, he is an elite grappler with a background in the Russian martial art of combat sambo.

His elite grappling game has gotten him eleven submissions in his twenty-four-fight mixed martial arts career. He is now going to face one of the best strikers in the game, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294. And given his strong ground game, ‘Volk’s BJJ coach, Craig Jones has come out with a way that the Aussie plans on countering one of Makhachev’s favorite submissions, which has fans in splits.

Craig Jones agrees with Khabib Nurmagomedov

Alexander Volkanovski will face UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and have the chance to become a double champion at UFC 294 on October 21. Charles Oliveira was originally scheduled to face the Dagestani but pulled out due to an injury. Jones said that if Makhachev tries his favorite triangle arm choke against the Aussie, the latter will use the unorthodox buggy choke to counter it and submit Makhachev instead.

Most think Jones probably said this in jest and was an example of his characteristic sense of humor. Jones also suggested that there is no such thing as sambo, the martial art Makhachev and Nurmagomedov excel in, and that it is a “myth”. Despite his love for Sambo, Nurmagomedov was once spotted wearing a t-shirt saying “If Sambo was easy, it would be called jiu-jitsu”. And Jones hoped that by beating the Dagestani, ‘Volk’ would expose the Russian martial art and “kill” it.
