Khamzat Chimaev is as much a technical fighter as he is a spontaneous one. He is known for his grappling and wrestling skills to take down opponents. ‘Borz’ has that primal power in himself to take down his opponent even when he is being battered, as witnessed in his fight against Gilbert Burns. But he has also shown a tendency to throw his game plan out the window and get drawn into an all-out brawl with his opponent.

Burns was Chimaev’s toughest opponent so far. Chimaev emerged victorious in his bout against Burns, but it was one of the most damaging fights for him. The undefeated star took more damage in his fight against Gilbert Burns than in 10 previous fights in his career combined. Later, Chimaev admitted the mistake that he committed against Burns.

In his recent escapade, Chimaev had a conversation with Chael Sonnen on the ESPN MMA YouTube channel. While having the conversation, Sonnen asked Chimaev to give his prediction about his upcoming fight against Kamaru Usman.

Chimaev was quick to add to his statement. He added, “We’re not gonna give the prediction, man. Never gonna give you… Can’t give a prediction before the fight. Everyone says gonna do this, gonna that, and the cage is everything is going a different way now. So that’s why I never can give, like for Gilbert Burns, I learned a lot of things. You would think one punch was going to be down in my head, so you know, the game plan against you. So, how to be a focused fight from the first second to the last second? So, I’m in a different mindset for my game now.”

This outtake from Chimaev could spell trouble for Usman. The young and hungry contender is staying focused and composed, unlike the brash versions we saw before. This maturity from ‘Borz’ is further reflected in his analysis of his UFC 273 outing.

Chimaev reflects on his first tough challenge in UFC 273 battle

Khamzat Chimaev never faced considerable difficulties in any of his matches before he met Gilbert Burns. The Brazilian gave the undefeated star a run for his money. He was the first fighter to have damaged Chimaev so badly. It seemed like an equal matchup despite a one-sided start. Chimaev blamed himself for getting excited and failing to listen to any advice from the coaches.

“I was too excited to knock him out,” Chimaev explained at the UFC 273 post-fight press conference. “I was saying to everybody all week I was going to knock him out in one round. I tried to knock him out. That was wrong for me, from the beginning.”

“The guy was tough, I didn’t accept that. From the first second to the last second, I tried to finish him. Next time, I’m going to work to be a little bit smarter. I’m going to smash somebody,” said Khamzat Chimaev in the post-fight press conference.
