As per several reports, Chimaev did not like McGregor insulting Khabib Nurmagomedov. As a result, he decided to teach the fighter a lesson. However, when he landed in Ireland, the authorities kept him in a cell for a few hours and flew him back to Sweden.

Former MMA fighter, Jake Shields does not believe the story one bit. ‘Borz’ recently got into a scuffle with middleweight fighter, Paulo Costa. Shields took to Twitter to address the McGregor and Costa incidents.

He wrote, “Khamzat flying to Ireland to fight Conor McGregor is as believed as him actually trying to fight Paulo Costa”.

Thus, the former UFC fighter does not seem to believe Chimaev was indeed trying to fight ‘Borrachinha’. Regardless, the Costa confrontation has left people excited.

Many fans were of the opinion that the Brazilian fighter looked composed during the incident, whereas Chimaev reacted in haste.

It would be interesting to see whether this situation causes them to clash in the Octagon in the future. Paulo Costa is coming off a recent win over Luke Rockhold at UFC 278. On the other hand, Chimaev will face veteran fighter, Nate Diaz.

Did Chimaev really fly to Ireland?

As per ‘Bloody Elbow‘, back in 2018, the Russian-born fighter flew to Ireland to confront ‘The Notorious’. His action was reportedly a result of the McGregor-Nurmagomedov UFC 229 clash. ‘Borz’ had a 1-0 pro record at that time.

Chimaev spoke about the incident before his fight with Li Jingliang. He said, “I was thinking that I would catch him in the streets or at the gym and beat him up. This is what he deserved.”

While the fighter was unsuccessful in his attempt, he will face McGregor’s rival soon.
