UFC welterweight Leon Edwards took to Twitter and fired shots at bitter rival Jorge Masvidal for ducking a fight. The aforementioned 170-pound fighters have been staring down the barrel of a grudge match for a significant period of time. Chiefly, the conversation around a new opponent for Edwards came into being after Khamzat Chimaev withdrew from their scheduled bout.

With ‘Borz’ out of the picture, Leon Edwards will be looking to fill in the spot with another high-profile name. Jorge Masvidal certainly fits that bill despite coming off a loss at UFC 251 to undisputed champion Kamaru Usman.

Leon Edwards is no stranger to being left out in the cold, and his misfortune seems to be extending into 2021. The Brit hasn’t fought since July 2019 and spent the entirety of 2020 on the sidelines. Moreover, he hasn’t been able to use his 8-fight win streak to get into line for a title shot due to his stint of inactivity.

Leon Edwards x Jorge Masvidal: A venomous showdown

The genesis of Masvidal and Edwards’ rivalry famously started backstage at UFC Fight Night: London. The event was headlined by Masvidal and Darren Till, and Edwards was also present on the same fight card. However, a backstage brawl kicked off between Leon Edwards and Masvidal that has still stuck in the minds of fans.

What’s more is that there hasn’t been an end to their rivalry, and it’s clear that the two need to face off. Not to mention, both fighters are ranked within close proximity and the bout makes sense from a rankings standpoint. ‘Rocky’ will be keen to make the fight happen, as Masvidal arguably got the better of him in their backstage brawl.

In turn, ‘Gamebred’ will also be looking for a match-up that will bring back his luster and star power to full capacity. After coming off a loss, it’s critical that he gets back into the win column and a grudge match would help bolster his profile. The UFC too will undoubtedly have plenty of promotional material in the build-up to this potential grudge match.
