Leon Edwards Makes Heartbreaking Confession on His Dad After Defeating Colby Covington in Front of Donald Trump at UFC 296

Leon Edwards and Colby Covington finally went head-to-head against each other in the main event of UFC 296. They exchanged words in a fiery press conference, getting fans excited about the eventual fight. However, the fight was rather one-sided as Edwards took the victory via unanimous decision. But following the fight, ‘Rocky’ bore his heart about the very thing that led him to throw a bottle at ‘Chaos’, his late father.

UFC 296 featured some amazing fights. However, it was the main event the fans were waiting for. Although Leon Edwards was not favoring a match-up against Colby Covington, UFC CEO Dana White called for the British fighter to defend his title against ‘Chaos’. Even Donald Trump was there to witness the fight, rooting for the former interim champion. Let’s see what transpired during the main event.

Colby Covington may not have fought for some time now, but he’s known for his endless gas tank and beating some of the best welterweights ever. So Leon Edwards wasn’t taking the fight lightly. Also, there is no love lost between the two after Covington mentioned ‘Rocky’s father during the press conference.

The fight started with the champion connecting a superior left hand. Colby Covington went for the first takedown of the fight, but couldn’t get it through. He did not try to use his grappling skills much during the first two rounds and preferred to play the striking against Leon Edwards, who is known for his striking prowess.

‘Rocky’ successfully landed some good strikes from the get-go. He was in control of the fight and seemingly won the first two rounds. However, Colby Covington started to increase his pace in the third round and scored the first takedown of the fight. Regardless, that did not last long as Edwards got out of that predicament and secured a takedown of his own, which was unusual, to say the least.

‘Chaos’ went for another takedown in the fourth round and almost got caught in a chokehold. He went for another takedown, but Leon Edwards showed great defense. The fight was in control of the champion for most of the time and foiled a lot of Chaos’s grappling attempts.

Leon Edwards was in the hunt for a knockout in the final round, which was apparent by his continuous attempts to land a head kick. But Colby Covington was not giving up that easily. He scored another takedown, but he was surprised by Edwards, who was trying to get a submission win. In the end, it was ‘Rocky’ who came out on top with a unanimous decision win at UFC 296. Thereafter, he mentioned how Covington’s distasteful words affected him before the fight.

‘Rocky’ was visibly emotional after his dominant win over Colby Covington. He mentioned how hard it was to keep his emotions in check during the post-fight interview. “This fight was very emotional for me. This guy [Covington] used my dad’s death as entertainment,” Edwards told Joe Rogan. He also mentioned that it took a toll on him and he needed some time to calm down and focus on the fight.

Leon Edwards even broke into tears after hearing what Colby Covington said about his father. He said, “After the press conference, I went backstage [and] I was crying because just for the rage. You can use my dad’s death as entertainment [and] that’s what he did.” It was an emotional rollercoaster ride for Edwards, but he proved his mettle as the champion and retained his welterweight title.

Colby Covington mentioned that his time away from the Octagon affected his performance at UFC 296. However, he assured the fans that he was going to bounce back. Meanwhile, there is no word on what’s next for Leon Edwards. He mentioned moving to the middleweight division, but nothing has yet been confirmed. Nevertheless, Edwards will take some time to enjoy his dominant win against Covington, ending the year certainly with a bang!
