We are less than three months away from the monumental UFC 300 pay-per-view event. The card has shaped up to be an exciting one with several high-profile fights. However, Dana White has yet to make an official announcement about the main event. With so many possible fights in hand, Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier believes there’s one fight that the UFC CEO may not consider headlining the April card.

Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards agreed to fight each other following the latter’s UFC 296 triumph. ‘Remember the Name’ waited for this opportunity for a long time and there were rumors that this could take place at UFC 300. However, Daniel Cormier believes that something is missing in that matchup. Let’s see what he had to say.

Daniel Cormier claims Leon Edwards vs Belal Muhammad doesn’t have enough history

UFC 300 is a historic event for Dana White and co. As such, he and the matchmakers will aim to put such a fight in the main event that involves two fighters who can draw as many people as they can because of a shared history between them. In a recent episode of the ‘DC &RC Show’, Daniel Cormier told co-host Ryan Clark, “UFC 300, it’s missing a big fight. The big fight that it’s missing has to have a backstory. That big fight has to have bad blood [and] that big fight has to bring the eyeballs, so it can’t be Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards.”

Despite not looking like the fight to possibly headline in April, Daniel Cormier did not take away anything from the welterweight champion and the 2nd-ranked contender. He firmly believes that it is a great fight since both Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad are top-tier fighters. “While it’s a fantastic fight, it does not have enough to it to be the main event,” ‘DC’ further added. Meanwhile, Ryan also put forth an argument that supported Cormier’s take on the Muhammad vs Edwards fight.

People aren’t rushing to watch the welterweight title fight

Ryan Clark explained that the welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad is a fight that’s going to happen, anyway.  Both of them worked their way through the division to get a position where they’d square off for the second time. Clark stated, “Leon-Belal Muhammad is like the fight that’s supposed to take place because both of these fighters have done what they need to do in the Octagon to make the fight take place.”

However, as Daniel Cormier mentioned earlier, Ryan Clark understands that this fight could be snubbed as the potential UFC 300 headliner since fans aren’t as invested in this fight as Dana White would want to. For this reason, the Muhammad vs Edwards fight could take the shine away from the historic PPV event. “It isn’t everybody rushing out of their homes, everyone’s rushing into ESPN+ to pay for PPV to see these two dudes at that event, that’s not the sort of names you need for that event,” Clark added.

The welterweight championship fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad will probably take place, but UFC 300 doesn’t look like the occasion for it. With less than three months for the PPV, the announcement is likely to come soon. We will have to wait and see what the UFC CEO ends up deciding to feature in the biggest spot on the UFC 300 card.
