Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker is on a 2 fight win streak while Costa is coming off of his first defeat that came at the hands of the Middleweight kingpin, Israel Adesanya.

As the news broke out about Costa’s illness, Kelvin Gastelum was eager to show his interest in a notorious way. He took to social media with a GIF where famous actor Matthew Perry was seen awaiting a phone call, hinting at the fact that he was waiting for a call himself.

Kelvin Gastelum would love to replace Costa

It’s clear that Gastelum is ready to replace Paulo Costa and fight Robert Whittaker for the main event. Kelvin Gastelum needs to win a big fight against a top-ranked opponent like Whittaker to scale the UFC middleweight rankings.

Right now Kelvin Gastelum is ranked 8 with a record of 17 wins and 6 losses, and ‘The Reaper’ is the #1 middleweight with 23 wins and 5 losses.

If he could beat Whittaker, his ranking will certainly be bolstered and with a spot of luck, he might find himself in the Top-5.

Although fighters in the Top-5 have a legitimate claim at the title, Gastelum might have to win more fights in order to find himself butting heads with former foe, Israel Adesanya.

Gastelum was supposed to fight Whittaker way back at UFC 234; however, the event failed to materialize. Then Gastelum took on Israel Adesanya at UFC 236. It was a hard-fought fight that lasted 5 rounds and earned the Fight of the Year accolade.

Both fighters went the distance, and the Kiwi eventually took the win by way of decision. After all this Gastelum was never scheduled to fight Whittaker again; something that never sat right with MMA fans.

For now, Gastelum is waiting for the call as his intentions are very clear. Is the UFC interested in booking this fight? Will ‘The Reaper’ accept the offer? Only time will tell.
