Joe Rogan‘s $250 million podcast is the largest platform in the (English-speaking) world, by far. Part of the reason for this is that the combat sports enthusiast is not afraid to take on tough topics. As a result of his popularity among his viewership, the JRE podcast host is a source of guidance on many topics for many who look up to him.

And the UFC commentator addressed one such tough topic on his podcast that especially affects young males. Rogan was joined by YouTuber Chris Williamson of the ‘Modern Wisdom’ podcast, where the duo discussed the dangers of drunk driving and why it is a bad idea.

During the course of the podcast with Williamson, Joe Rogan said that drunk driving was a scourge that ruined people’s lives. To drive home the point, Rogan gave the example of a kid in his high school whose life turned upside down and led to dire consequences after being involved in a drunk driving accident that killed his friend.

“We should, like teach people that you don’t fu**ing do that [drink and drive]. I went to high school with a kid and he’s a good guy. I knew him from the time I was fourteen. And then when I guess he was a senior in high school, he was drunk and crashed his car and killed his friend,” Rogan said.

Rogan recalled running into the kid on the street and saying hi to him after the accident and how the accident made him a social pariah to whom no one talked. “And I remember running into him on the street… and I said ‘hey man, how you doing?’ He’s like (nods head listlessly). It’s like he was done. His life was over, man. He wasn’t, you know, a regular kid anymore. He was a kid who killed his friend… He was a good, normal guy, people liked him. And then all of a sudden, a pariah, everyone knew what he did,” the Texas resident added.

Interestingly, Rogan’s acquaintances from the world of MMA have also run into drunk driving issues. UFC fighters have been guilty of drinking and driving as two of its biggest stars were sentenced for drunk driving just last year.

Israel Adesanya, Tony Ferguson arrested for DUI last year

Drunk driving leads to thousands of families losing their loved ones, and caused over thirteen thousand preventable deaths in the US last year alone. Another, more illustrative way to look at it is that there is one drunk driving death every 39 minutes in the country, according to statistics compiled by the NHTSA.

Many drunk driving deaths could have been avoided if the perpetrator simply eschewed driving while under the influence of alcohol, and are thus classified as preventable deaths. And this is also a problem among UFC fighters, with Tony Ferguson and Israel Adesanya being arrested for it last year.

Fan favorite former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson  found himself on the wrong side of the law after crashing his truck into a fire hydrant, which led ‘El Cucuy’ being sentenced to a one-year probation. In his adopted country of New Zealand, former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, was sentenced to a fine and suspended license after being arrested for drunk driving last year. GOAT contender and heavyweight champion Jon Jones had also been arrested and sentenced to a fine and six-month license suspension for DUI back in 2012.
