As per Peterson, the character is so compelling mainly because he has had a difficult life which viewers can be sympathetic about. There is a lot of pain in the story. In addition to this, Phoenix, as an actor, adds grace and gives a stellar performance. This entire mixture thus led to an extremely memorable character.
